Fer Jalil represents a new generation of content creators who discovered their voice not on YouTube, but on TikTok. Armed with just a camera, creativity, and an intuitive understanding of short video language, she has made a significant impact in the digital landscape. What began during the pandemic as playful makeup experiments has positioned her as a prominent figure in the Mexican digital community, particularly among Gen Z.
With a diverse range of content including tutorials, challenges, GRWMs (Get Ready With Me), ASMR, and videos that blend beauty with entertainment, Fer has experimented with various formats to cultivate a following of nearly 40 million across her platforms. However, beyond these impressive figures lies a tale of resilience—navigating moments of uncertainty, fluctuations in follower count, and the temptation to abandon a career that, like many online, demands constant reinvention. Her ability to maintain an honest relationship with her audience and continuously generate fresh ideas has been pivotal to her success.
Today, Fer Jalil embodies much more than just a content creator on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. She has transformed her influence into a business venture with Ferja, her own makeup brand, and has received accolades that affirm her status as one of the most admired Mexican creators among her peers. In the following interview, we delve deeper beyond the videos, metrics, and algorithms to understand the person behind the lip gloss and eyeliner: what drives her, how she has faced her toughest challenges, and what it means to grow in the public eye.
A Career Beyond a Hobby
Fer Jalil reflects on being part of a new wave of content creators who view their work as both a hobby and a business. She notes, “I think it used to be more of a hobby, but I never saw it that way. From the beginning, I wanted this to be my job, so I committed fully to make it happen, and now it is my full-time job.”
Her journey started with a fascination for content creation inspired by her mother, a photographer. Growing up in front of the camera, Fer enjoyed editing photos and videos, leading her to discover that a career in this realm was possible. “If I can study metrics, understand what works and what doesn’t, I thought, ‘this is my dream job,’” she explains.
As the digital landscape evolved, so did the influence of algorithms on content visibility. Fer shares her perspective on navigating these changes: “I view the algorithm differently. I don’t see it as random or something to guess; if you have a good hook, visual storytelling, and user retention, you can anticipate that your content will perform well.”
The Creative Process and Audience Connection
Fer discusses her creative process, revealing that while she does not currently have a team, she used to analyse metrics closely to understand viewer engagement. She would often adjust her videos based on where viewers lost interest, leading to a lot of trial and error initially. “I’d take the video private, cut out the boring parts, and re-upload it, ensuring I learned from those moments,” she says.
Despite the challenges of constantly generating new ideas, Fer finds inspiration in her surroundings and her own past content. “I love to think deeply about new concepts, often while just sitting and staring at a wall. I mix past ideas with new inspirations to create something unique,” she adds.
While she does not currently utilise artificial intelligence in her creative process, Fer acknowledges the rise of AI-generated content and its implications. “I believe anyone can use the tools they want. As long as everyone is happy with what they are creating, that’s what matters,” she states.
Building a Brand and Personal Identity
Fer has also ventured into entrepreneurship with her own makeup brand, allowing her to explore marketing strategies that resonate with her personal style. “Starting as a content creator, I was hired by many brands to promote their products. Now that I have my own, I can sell it however I wish, breaking out of traditional marketing constraints,” she explains.
Her audience appreciates this authenticity, as they recognise that her brand embodies her personality. “I think everything—my brand, my profile—is infused with my essence, and my community sees that,” she adds.
When discussing the complexities of separating her personal identity from her online persona, Fer notes, “I feel I am the same person both online and offline. I share my highs and lows with my audience because it makes me feel more human and fosters a sense of family among us.”
Navigating Challenges and Mental Health
Fer candidly addresses the pressures of content creation, particularly during a time when she faced a decline in followers. “It was overwhelming, and there was immense pressure to perform. However, I relied on emotional intelligence and support from my best friend, who encouraged me to keep going,” she recalls.
She acknowledges the potential for loneliness in the digital space, especially when speaking to a camera while feeling isolated. Yet, Fer transformed her perspective, realising that her followers provide companionship, stating, “I don’t feel alone anymore; I have my girls, my followers, who make what I do worthwhile.”
Advice for Aspiring Creators and the Future of Content Creation
When asked about advice for those aspiring to be content creators, Fer emphasises the importance of mental well-being and passion. “Be sure you’re in a good mental space and that this is what you truly want to do. If it is, pursue it with consistency and love—it’s rewarding and fun,” she advises.
Looking ahead, Fer envisions a dynamic future for content creation in Latin America. “There are so many niches emerging beyond traditional vlogs or beauty content. I’m excited to see what new avenues will develop,” she concludes, affirming her commitment to continue creating content that brings her joy for years to come.
