Maritime Heroes Celebrated for Inspiring Future Seafarers and Supporting Coastal Communities

Celebrating Exceptional Contributions in Maritime Service

On 3 September 2026, eleven remarkable seafarers were honoured with the esteemed Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service, recognising their extraordinary commitment and contributions to the maritime industry. This prestigious award underscores the vital role of the UK’s merchant seafarers, who are integral to global trade, tourism, and national security. These dedicated individuals operate commercial vessels that transport passengers and goods worldwide, maintaining supply chains, fostering economic growth, and standing ready to assist the nation in times of crisis.

Inspiring Young Mariners

Among the recipients is Captain Joe Furness, a 31-year-old from Oldham who has made significant strides in inspiring the next generation of maritime professionals. Through his engaging social media platform, JoeTheSailor, Captain Furness has motivated millions of young people to explore careers in maritime, while personally mentoring over 100 cadets and junior officers. His passion for the industry was sparked by film, and his impact extends beyond mentorship; during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, he exhibited exceptional leadership when ten passengers aboard his ship contracted the virus, earning recognition from the Hong Kong Government for his exemplary care.

Captain Furness expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s an incredible honour to be recognised and a genuinely humbling surprise. My main focus has always been to open up our world to people who don’t know much about shipping and to ensure new cadets feel supported.”

Pioneering Inclusivity at Sea

Another notable recipient is Captain Martel Fursdon, who has made history as the first female captain in The Lundy Company’s legacy. Throughout her career, Captain Fursdon has championed safer and more inclusive practices at sea, establishing a mentoring network for women aspiring to rise through the ranks. Her contributions to safety are significant, including the revision of safety protocols across 15 vessels. Additionally, her efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic were crucial in facilitating the mass repatriation of seafarers left stranded due to travel restrictions.

Overwhelmed by the honour, Captain Fursdon remarked, “I’m incredibly touched and honoured to receive the Merchant Navy Medal. It signifies service and dedication, often carried out quietly, so this recognition is truly humbling. As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, I hope it inspires young women to believe they belong here.”

Decades of Dedication and Support

Captain Brian Nibbs, aged 87, was also honoured for his unwavering voluntary service to the maritime sector. With an impressive career spanning over five decades, Captain Nibbs has shown remarkable compassion, particularly in supporting the families affected by the tragic L’Ecume II boating accident in 2022, which claimed the lives of three fishermen off the coast of Jersey.

From his early days with Ellerman Lines in 1955 to becoming the Harbour Master of Jersey in 1997, Captain Nibbs has dedicated his life to maritime service. A standout moment in his career was navigating from the Panama Canal to Sydney in the 1960s, relying solely on celestial navigation before the advent of GPS technology.

Honouring Maritime Excellence

Maritime Minister Keir Mather praised the recipients, stating, “I’m extremely proud of the UK Merchant Navy. This year’s recipients exemplify exceptional service, dedication, and leadership, highlighting the crucial role played by merchant seafarers and fishing fleets in supporting the UK economy.”

Stuart Rivers, CEO of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, echoed similar sentiments, congratulating the medal recipients for their outstanding service. “It’s humbling to read the citations and see how these remarkable individuals have contributed to the sector and changed lives for the better,” he added.
