Focusing solely on reducing or eliminating screen time and technology use within educational and familial settings may not be the most effective approach for fostering positive learning outcomes among younger students. A more beneficial strategy would involve considering factors such as the design of educational technology, the activities it replaces or complements, and the level of engagement from guardians and educators in the integration of these resources.

This perspective is supported by a recent report from the American Psychological Association (APA), which examines the role of educational technology (EdTech) among children and adolescents aged 5 to 18. The report, titled “APA Expert Report on Learning in Children and Adolescents with Educational Technology,” reveals that various studies indicate EdTech is neither inherently beneficial nor detrimental to students. Its impact is contingent upon how students engage with it, how adults incorporate it into learning environments, and the specific age and individual needs of each child.

The association highlights the rapid evolution of educational technology and the significant disparities in the quality of available tools. To ensure these resources effectively serve young learners, decisions regarding their use must be grounded in rigorous scientific evidence rather than marketing claims.

The Impact of Screen Time on Learning

The report acknowledges the direct influence of screen time and moments of connectivity on learning processes and psychosocial well-being. It notes that increased use of devices correlates with reduced time for sleep, reading, physical activity, socialising with peers, and engaging in hands-on activities. Furthermore, the timing of device usage plays a crucial role; for instance, high-stimulation digital activities may be inappropriate before bedtime or prior to tasks requiring sustained concentration.

However, the APA cautions that merely designing regulations to limit screen time may be less effective than adopting comprehensive alternatives that address the issue holistically. The organisation emphasises that digital media should not be used simply to occupy young children at home or as a reward in educational settings. Instead, technology should be integrated as a tool with defined objectives, rather than as a substitute for necessary interaction, play, or developmental experiences.

For students aged 9 to 12, the report suggests that they may use new technologies more independently, provided that measures are introduced to encourage them to reflect on the knowledge gained through these tools and how it can be applied outside of digital platforms. In these cases, the challenge shifts from merely controlling access to teaching children self-regulation mechanisms regarding technology use. This entails adults supporting the process and promoting conscious usage rather than merely enforcing time restrictions.

Autonomy and Responsibility in Teen Technology Use

Finally, the document points out that adolescents aged 13 to 18 can exercise greater autonomy in selecting and using specific tools. Among its suggestions is to require students to present their initial attempts before comparing them with AI-generated responses, identifying differences, and explaining which they believe is superior and why.

The central principle is to utilise artificial intelligence after students have begun to formulate their own thoughts, rather than as a replacement for their initial drafts, solutions, or ideas. This way, the tool can serve as a support for developing and assessing reasoning, rather than supplanting it.

Moving Beyond Screen Time Limitations

The report advocates that merely prohibiting or reducing technology use in educational contexts does not necessarily ensure improved learning outcomes. Instead, it asserts that digital tools can enhance these processes when educational objectives are clearly defined, resources are evaluated based on their results rather than just participation levels, and the activities displaced by screen use are analysed. Additionally, it calls for the design of adoption plans that include ongoing training, research, and evaluation mechanisms.
