New Building Unveiled in Honour of Fallen Iraqi Soldier’s Son

Honouring a Fallen Hero

The newly constructed block has been named the Muir Building in tribute to SSgt Chris Muir, an Ammunition Technician who lost his life while serving in Iraq in 2003. The official opening was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by his son, Ben Muir, in the presence of SSgt Muir’s extended family and former colleagues, creating a poignant moment of remembrance and honour.

Prior to his deployment to Iraq, SSgt Muir served as an instructor at DM Kineton. His life was tragically cut short during an explosive ordnance disposal operation. The decision to name the building after him serves as a lasting legacy, reminding future generations of Ammunition Technicians of the bravery, professionalism, and steadfast dedication to duty that he exemplified throughout his career.

Innovative Construction Techniques

Led by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the project saw the Muir Building constructed by Algeco on behalf of VIVO, one of DIO’s partners in the built estate industry. Employing modern construction methods, the building was primarily manufactured off-site, allowing for a reduction in disruption during the construction process at DM Kineton.

The facility comprises 46 ensuite bedrooms designated for officers and senior non-commissioned officers, with two of these rooms being fully accessible. Furthermore, the building features kitchenettes, communal areas, laundry facilities, utility rooms, and a dedicated cycle store, all aimed at enhancing the living experience of its occupants.

Sustainability at the Forefront

The Muir Building has been designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating several features to enhance energy efficiency and minimise environmental impact. Solar panels installed on the roof contribute to the building’s power supply, while air source heat pumps ensure adequate heating throughout the accommodation.

Additionally, the building utilises recycled water from sink drainage systems for boot-washing stations, and landscaping efforts have included the planting of additional trees, further contributing to the site’s ecological footprint.

A Personal Tribute

Ben Muir expressed his gratitude at the naming of the building, stating, “It was a lovely surprise to hear that the building would be named after my Dad, so that his example will continue to inspire ammunition technical officers for years to come. It was a great pleasure to be here to officially open the new block.”

Richard Walsh, Project Delivery Manager for DIO RD Central, highlighted the significance of the project’s completion, noting, “Reaching handover is a fantastic achievement and marks the culmination of a huge amount of work from everyone involved. The Muir Building provides modern, high-quality accommodation that will greatly enhance the lived experience of personnel at DM Kineton for years to come.”

Looking Towards the Future

Lt Col Chris Ralling, Head of Establishment at DM Kineton, remarked on the emotional significance of the occasion: “The Muir Building was named in honour of one of our colleagues who tragically died on operations. It was a great pleasure to be joined by his family to open the building. The new block provides fantastic, sustainable accommodation for 46 personnel on site, complete with comfortable communal areas and cooking facilities—a fitting tribute to a much-loved colleague.”

The first soldiers are expected to move into the new accommodation block in early September, marking a new chapter for both the facility and its inhabitants.
