New Strategy Aims to Strengthen the UK’s Space Sector
The UK government has unveiled an ambitious national space strategy designed to enhance the country’s capabilities in growth, defence, and national security. This initiative is poised to play a crucial role in the reindustrialisation of the UK, with a significant investment of £7.8 billion allocated through to 2030. By consolidating government efforts in space investment and activities under a single framework, the strategy aims to stimulate growth, bolster security, and support technologies integral to daily life.
Recognising the strategic significance of space in safeguarding national security, the government plans to enhance Space Domain Awareness, which involves monitoring satellites, rockets, and orbital debris. Key initiatives include a £149 million investment in the European Space Agency’s Vigil mission and £85 million for the National Space Operations Centre. These efforts will enable British technology to provide earlier warnings of potential satellite collisions, hostile activities, and solar storms, thereby protecting essential power, communication, and navigation services that citizens rely on daily.
Enhanced Defence Capabilities and Connectivity
In addition to bolstering security measures, £880 million will be directed towards improving the UK’s space control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. This funding will support technologies equipped to monitor military operations on the ground and safeguard satellites from potential threats, ensuring swift and decisive action is possible to protect both terrestrial and extraterrestrial assets.
Furthermore, £2.8 billion is earmarked to enhance connectivity, particularly through the Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit and SKYNET defence communications programmes. These advancements will not only benefit the Armed Forces but will also translate into improved connectivity for everyday users, bringing faster and more reliable internet access to rural areas and reducing mobile signal interruptions on trains through advanced satellite communications.
These strategic investments are projected to contribute significantly to the growth of the UK space sector, which is currently valued at £18.6 billion and employs over 55,000 skilled individuals. This initiative aims to solidify Britain’s position as a leader in the global space arena, supporting vital satellite services and pioneering missions like the UK-built Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover.

Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasised the importance of this strategy in maintaining Britain’s security amidst increasing economic and military competition in space. He noted that the plan would not only enhance safety by improving satellite launch capabilities and threat detection but also create skilled employment opportunities and foster connectivity across the nation.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting added that the strategy acknowledges the necessity of safeguarding UK and allied space assets as threats in orbit become more complex. With an investment of over £3 billion from the Defence Investment Plan, the government aims to ensure that the UK’s defence capabilities in space remain robust, facilitating economic growth while securing national interests.
Innovative Approaches to Future Space Endeavours
The strategy also sets aside £40 million to nurture pioneering in-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing technologies. These innovations will enable the repair and maintenance of satellites affected by space debris, solar storms, or adversarial actions, while also facilitating the removal of hazardous objects from orbit. This forward-thinking approach will lead to the development of new products tailored for the unique conditions of space, potentially revolutionising sectors such as pharmaceuticals and energy.
Additional support for the UK space sector includes £148 million for European rocket programmes and £30 million for the SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland, which will enhance the UK’s independent satellite launch capabilities and create new employment opportunities. The strategy also allocates £163 million for space science and exploration missions, including the development of the Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover, which is poised to advance world-leading research and contribute to the government’s reindustrialisation goals.
