MMO Set to Restart I-VMS Enforcement as Installation Efforts Advance

Major Progress in Vessel Registration for Nemo Devices

In July 2026, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) announced that over 92% of eligible vessels have successfully registered for a Nemo device. This significant achievement comes in the wake of initiatives aimed at resolving issues related to the interruption of data transmissions from SC2 devices to the UK Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) Hub.

Currently, nearly half of the registered devices have been installed, with expectations that the remaining installations will be completed in the upcoming weeks. As the process of replacing devices continues, the MMO is gearing up to reinstate standard compliance and enforcement of I-VMS regulations for licensed under-12 metre fishing vessels operating in English waters.

Encouragement for Vessel Owners to Act Promptly

Vessel owners who have yet to acquire an MMO-approved I-VMS device are strongly encouraged to do so at their earliest convenience. The MMO has reached out to affected licence holders, providing guidance on how to update their records or purchase the necessary devices.

To comply with regulations, it is essential for vessels to be equipped with an MMO-approved I-VMS device capable of transmitting data to the UK VMS Hub. For those awaiting installation, it is advisable to charge their Nemo device for 48 hours prior to their appointment and ensure that the green light indicator is illuminated. Until installation, devices should be securely stored in their original packaging.

Future Steps and Airtime Contracts

CLS UK will proactively reach out to vessel owners ahead of any airtime payment requests. The initiation of airtime contracts and renewals is anticipated to commence once the standard enforcement of I-VMS is reinstated. This step is crucial in maintaining the operational integrity of the fishing fleet.

Fishermen who have concerns regarding their Nemo device, or suspect any faults, are encouraged to contact CLS UK without delay, even if their warranty period has lapsed. Each case will be assessed individually for potential remedial work or replacement devices.

The Importance of I-VMS Data in Fisheries Management

The data collected through I-VMS plays a vital role in fisheries management, ensuring fair and consistent regulation across the fleet by providing precise information about vessel locations. This data is also instrumental in supporting evidence requirements, particularly in cases where the displacement of fishing activities may necessitate compensation assessments.
