Chepstow Welcomes 250th UK Banking Hub, Ensuring Access to Cash and Personal Banking Services

New Banking Hub Opens in Chepstow

In a significant development for the residents of Chepstow, the 250th banking hub in the United Kingdom has officially opened its doors. This new facility, inaugurated by Treasury Minister Lucy Rigby, is set to preserve essential banking services in the community, ensuring that local residents and over 100 businesses can continue to access cash and face-to-face banking support right on their doorstep.

The timing of this opening is crucial, especially as the last remaining bank branch in Chepstow is scheduled to close next month. This closure would have forced residents to travel approximately eight miles to Lydney, a journey that could take around 30 minutes by public transport and incur a cost of £4. Such a barrier is particularly challenging for individuals who depend on nearby banking services for their daily needs.

Community Benefits of the New Hub

The introduction of this banking hub means that local residents can now deposit and withdraw cash, deposit cheques, and consult with community bankers without the need for long journeys. This initiative not only safeguards vital banking services but also bolsters the growth of local businesses. Additionally, the hub features a free-to-use ATM, offering round-the-clock access to cash for the community.

Today’s opening marks a milestone in the government’s commitment to establish at least 350 banking hubs across the UK by the end of the current parliamentary term. Similar hubs have also been launched in other Welsh towns, such as Holyhead, Prestatyn, and Porthcawl, demonstrating a concerted effort to enhance banking accessibility nationwide.

Support from Government Officials

Rt Hon Lucy Rigby, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, expressed her enthusiasm for the new hub, stating, “This new banking hub means that local residents will still have access to important services they rely on.” She highlighted the government’s progress towards fulfilling its manifesto commitment, which includes ensuring that individuals and businesses throughout the country have access to the cash and banking services they need.

Welsh Secretary of State, Rt Hon Stephen Kinnock, also voiced his support, noting that the initiative aims to make banking services more accessible within local communities. He expressed his delight that the new hub in Chepstow would facilitate continued face-to-face banking for residents well into the future.

Positive Impact on Local Communities

Gareth Oakley, CEO of Cash Access UK, announced with pride the opening of Chepstow’s hub as a testament to the ongoing efforts to provide crucial banking services. He remarked, “The services are hugely popular, with a busy front desk to support cash transactions and a rotating community banker to assist with face-to-face banking needs.” The organisation has been rolling out a new hub each week, illustrating the positive impact these facilities have on local communities.

Natalie Ceeney CBE, Chair of Cash Access UK, reinforced the importance of these hubs, stating, “Every one of our 250 banking hubs exists because millions of people and small businesses across the UK need somewhere to walk in, deposit their takings, withdraw cash, or sit down with someone face to face about their banking.” Since the beginning of 2026, the hubs have supported over eight million transactions, highlighting the ongoing need for in-person banking and cash access.

Future Considerations for Banking Access

The establishment of the new banking hub in Chepstow comes on the heels of an independent review commissioned by the UK Government in May. This review aims to assess the ramifications of diminished access to in-person banking services, identifying any detriment to consumers, communities, and businesses. Recommendations from this review are expected to be presented to the Government in October, potentially influencing future banking accessibility initiatives.
