This Council must persist in addressing severe situations across various nations. In Iran, the violent crackdown on peaceful demonstrators in January resulted in the tragic deaths of thousands at the hands of Iranian security forces. Since then, at least thirty protesters have been executed, with many more languishing on death row. The disturbing reports of torture and mistreatment of detainees—including women, ethnic minorities, and religious groups such as the Baha’i and Christians—raise significant alarm. We firmly advocate for accountability regarding these atrocious actions.
Concerns Over Hong Kong’s Political Climate
Turning to Hong Kong, the recent sentencing of the leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance, alongside Joshua Wong, exemplifies the manner in which the National Security Law is being weaponised against individuals exercising their rights to political expression and engagement. We reiterate our call for the repeal of this law imposed by Beijing and demand the immediate release of Jimmy Lai. It is imperative that China honour its international obligations.
Humanitarian Crisis in Palestine
Lastly, the United Kingdom is deeply troubled by the worsening conditions in Palestine. In Gaza, fundamental humanitarian needs remain unmet, while in the West Bank, the expansion of settlements and violence from settlers jeopardises the feasibility of a two-State solution. The UK has recently undertaken measures to address this pressing issue. We urge all parties involved to adhere to international law, safeguard civilians, and ensure unobstructed humanitarian access. Furthermore, we condemn the violations perpetrated by Hamas and other non-state actors.
