£84 Million Investment Set to Transform Plymouth’s Defence Sector
A substantial investment package worth £84 million, comprising £50 million from the government and up to an additional £34 million from industry and local partners, has been unveiled, positioning Plymouth as a national frontrunner in defence maritime autonomy. This financial commitment is anticipated to generate nearly 1,000 jobs, while also assisting 500 individuals in securing employment through the establishment of a new National Centre for Marine Autonomy.
Over 400 businesses across the UK are set to benefit from this initiative, which will also provide valuable skills and training opportunities for thousands of young people in the Plymouth area. The initiative was officially endorsed by Lord Coaker during his visit to Market Hall, where he approved Team Plymouth’s strategic business case and highlighted the investment’s potential to bolster national security, support local enterprises, and catalyse the city’s reindustrialisation.
Enhancing Job Opportunities and Skills Development
The funding will facilitate the establishment of Plymouth’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy, a project projected to create 120 new jobs while attracting over 30 businesses. This includes start-ups and scale-ups that are focused on developing advanced maritime technologies. In conjunction with this investment, a newly confirmed £1.5 million ‘Get Plymouth Working’ scheme aims to assist 500 individuals in finding employment in sectors such as defence, advanced manufacturing, engineering, and construction, with a particular emphasis on veterans and young adults aged 18 to 25.
Additionally, around 750 individuals are expected to acquire new technical skills and qualifications, while more than 7,000 young people will gain access to STEM training, thus enriching the local talent pool. The wider programme is also expected to support over 400 UK businesses, particularly those involved in robotics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems.
Government Commitment to National Security and Economic Growth
Defence Minister Lord Vernon Coaker emphasised the significance of this investment, stating that it will firmly establish Plymouth as a leader in defence maritime autonomy. He noted that the initiative will not only create high-skilled jobs but also support local businesses and offer new training opportunities to thousands of residents. By fostering collaboration among government, industry, and local partners, the investment aims to generate nearly 1,000 jobs while equipping the Armed Forces and defence industry with essential skills, thus enhancing national security and reinforcing community prosperity.
Sir Chris Gardner, Senior Responsible Officer for Team Plymouth, remarked on the milestone achieved through the Defence Growth Deal funding, which will further solidify Plymouth’s status as the UK’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy. He highlighted the collective ambition of the partners involved in unlocking the city and the wider region’s potential through job creation, business support, and skills investment.
Strengthening the South West’s Defence Ecosystem
Neal Misell, CEO of Babcock Nuclear, praised the Plymouth Defence Growth Deal as a testament to the collective achievements possible when government, industry, education, and local partners unite towards a common goal. He underscored Babcock’s commitment as one of the region’s largest employers and a founding member of Team Plymouth, stating that the partnership is pivotal in aligning educational initiatives with industry needs to transform Plymouth’s defence capabilities into sustainable skills, jobs, and economic growth.
Plymouth and the South West region are already integral to the UK defence landscape, with the Ministry of Defence having spent over £6.6 billion in the area during 2024/25, directly supporting 37,300 industry jobs and allocating nearly £400 million to small and medium-sized enterprises. Furthermore, a remarkable £7 billion is being invested at HMNB Devonport as part of the most significant naval infrastructure programme since the Cold War.
Regeneration and Future Growth Prospects
This latest investment is also set to facilitate the regeneration of the Turnchapel waterfront and the development of new industrial and commercial spaces throughout the city, fostering an environment conducive to business expansion and long-term economic growth. During his visit, Lord Coaker took the opportunity to tour HMNB Devonport, City College Plymouth, and Babcock International, engaging with local leaders, educators, businesses, and students to assess how defence investment is already making a positive impact on job creation, skills development, and overall growth within the city.
