Launch of Habilidad Física 100: México
On 16th September, Netflix unveiled “Habilidad Física 100: México,” an exhilarating reality show that merges competitive sports with extreme survival challenges. Set within an arena inspired by pre-Hispanic architecture, the show features 100 contestants vying through a series of demanding physical trials until only one emerges victorious. This production not only marks one of the first unscripted formats created by Netflix in Latin America, but it also signifies the establishment of one of the most intricate technological infrastructures ever developed by the Californian company in the region for such a production.
Innovative Technological Ecosystem
According to the production team, the project extended beyond merely recreating scenarios reflective of Mayan culture. The extensive data, video, and audio requirements, combined with the need for high-standard lighting systems, necessitated the creation of an entire technological ecosystem. This was managed from a central control room with a dynamic rehearsal system. This ambitious endeavour was the result of collaboration between Mexican technicians and creatives who conducted six months of tests in the recording studios to ensure that operations met the demands of each anticipated challenge.
The technological infrastructure was designed around three principal pillars: visual precision, live sound, and large-scale coordination. To address the first aspect, the production team employed a system comprising 120 cameras operating simultaneously, which included 60 action cameras, 20 studio cameras, and 40 robotic units. This represented the most ambitious camera system developed by the platform in the region up to that point.
Advanced Audio and Visual Capture
The various recording angles were pre-visualised during the pre-production phase using 3D software that allowed the team to anticipate capture positions and requirements prior to the final recording. On the audio front, the platform designed a system capable of processing 128 audio tracks in real-time, aimed at capturing the complete acoustic environment of the competition arena without interference. This sound infrastructure incorporated 100 wireless microphones distributed among the contestants, alongside more than 30 ambient microphones strategically placed around the set.
To effectively coordinate all these elements on a large scale, a control room was established, capable of simultaneously processing all video and audio signals. This setup facilitated real-time monitoring of the production during each physical challenge. The volume of data managed by this unit reached a scale comparable to that of a high-profile sports broadcast, as noted by Netflix.
A Model for Global Production
“Habilidad Física 100: México” has set a new benchmark for production formats on Netflix. The platform adapted its conventional workflows to develop a framework from scratch, tailoring production spaces to accommodate the diverse themes of the challenges. Consequently, four groups of 25 individuals were created, each composed of directors, robotic camera operators, and specialised content recording personnel.
The engineering solutions devised for this reorganisation, developed by Mexican professionals, have been shared as a working model with teams in Italy, Sweden, India, France, Spain, and the United States, all eager to replicate the success of the South Korean reality show “Physical: 100.”
José Lascurain, Director of Live & Unscripted Content for Netflix in Mexico, expressed pride in leading such an ambitious production. He stated, “It was months of pushing ourselves as a team, innovating, dreaming big, and not being afraid to achieve what seemed impossible. This project clearly reflects Mexico’s creative maturity and technical prowess.”
