Returning Wet and Windy Conditions Next Week
Following a predominantly dry and warm beginning to the weekend, the UK is set to experience a shift towards wetter and windier weather starting from Sunday. This transition will bring bouts of heavy rain and strong winds, affecting various regions throughout the week ahead.
On Friday, many areas will enjoy a dry day, with temperatures generally reaching the mid-20s Celsius, and the southeast potentially seeing highs of 27°C. However, further north and west, cloud cover and sporadic rain are expected to advance southeastward, followed by blustery showers that may bring hail and isolated thunderstorms.
Saturday is anticipated to offer the best weather of the weekend for the majority, characterised by sunny intervals and predominantly dry conditions across central and southern parts of the UK. Nonetheless, showers will persist in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and some northwestern regions of England and Wales, with increasing windiness expected later in the day across the northwest.
Weather Changes on Sunday
As Sunday approaches, a weather front will move eastward across the UK, signalling a notable change. Rain is forecasted to sweep across the country, initially bringing the heaviest and most sustained precipitation to western and northwestern areas. The advancing rain may also trigger a few thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds. Nevertheless, eastern and southeastern England are likely to maintain mostly fine and warm conditions for much of the day, with temperatures reaching 23°C in certain locations.
On Monday, many regions will experience a more settled day, as any lingering rain in the southeast will clear, paving the way for brighter conditions and sunny spells. However, northwestern areas may still see a few showers, with temperatures not matching the warmth of Sunday.
Significant Weather Shifts Forecasted
By Tuesday, the approach of a deeper Atlantic low-pressure system is predicted, heralding a more substantial period of wet and windy weather. Greg Wolverson, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, indicated that this shift marks a transition from a brief spell of settled weather to a more typical autumnal pattern influenced by Atlantic conditions.
Wolverson noted, “During the weekend, we will observe weather fronts advancing from the northwest, followed by the development of a deeper low-pressure system to the west of the UK early next week.” He further explained that this low-pressure system is likely to draw in warm, moist air from the Atlantic, resulting in periods of rain and strengthening winds. Although there remains some uncertainty regarding the exact track and intensity of the system, confidence is growing that the heaviest and most persistent rainfall will occur across western and northwestern regions, while many parts of the UK are expected to endure wet and windy weather through Tuesday and Wednesday.
Despite these conditions, temperatures are likely to remain notably warm for this time of year, with highs in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius expected on both Tuesday and Wednesday, along with some notably warm overnight temperatures.
