New Initiative to Boost British Exports
The recent pilot initiative from UK Export Finance (UKEF), valued at up to £5 billion, aims to enhance the foothold of British exports in rapidly growing markets such as Brazil, Morocco, and Mexico. This strategic move is designed to create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth within the UK, aligning with the Chancellor’s commitment to “Backing Britain” through procurement and employment initiatives that foster growth in every community.
Under the newly announced plans, British businesses will find increased opportunities to expand their export activities abroad, thereby contributing to local job creation and economic development back home. The introduction of a new UKEF pilot product, dubbed Flexible Finance, will enable selected buyers in these burgeoning economies to access loans with more favourable terms, encouraging them to opt for British goods and services.
Flexible Financing for International Buyers
This innovative product differs from existing UKEF guarantees by providing borrowers with enhanced flexibility regarding the utilisation of their funding. It encourages international buyers to collaborate with UK suppliers by facilitating access to UKEF support. Additionally, UKEF will offer matchmaking and procurement assistance to British suppliers, ensuring a cohesive approach to boosting exports.
The guarantees provided under this pilot programme will cover up to 80% of a commercial loan for eligible overseas buyers, significantly improving access to financing for these foreign entities. This initiative not only establishes a vital relationship between UKEF and the borrowers but also promotes the importation of British goods and services into their markets.
Government Officials Advocate for Export Growth
Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey MP, expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, “We’re backing British businesses to strike more deals overseas, especially in countries which are growing fast but where we don’t yet have a substantial British presence.” He emphasised that this new approach is integral to his forthcoming speech in Liverpool, reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting British industry and innovation, which in turn will create additional markets abroad and generate jobs domestically.
Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, also highlighted the belief in Britain’s capacity to engage with global markets. He stated, “Through Flexible Finance, we are not just sending a message to other nations that they should buy British; we are laying the foundation for sustainable growth and job creation in the UK as our companies capitalise on a vibrant export market.”
Adapting to Market Needs
This initiative marks the latest enhancement to UKEF’s offerings, reflecting a responsive approach to the Industrial Strategy. Following the introduction of a new defence export facility in June, which increased UKEF’s support capacity for defence exports by £50 billion, the Flexible Finance product signifies a continued commitment to empowering British businesses in the global market.
