£16 Million Legal Support for Families Facing Eviction and Hardship

Government Introduces Legal Support Grant for Vulnerable Families

Starting from 1 October, the Government is set to launch a substantial Legal Support Grant aimed at providing assistance to individuals grappling with significant life challenges, including debt and housing crises. This initiative is designed to offer early intervention to prevent legal disputes from escalating into poverty and court proceedings.

Spanning from October 2026 to March 2029, the programme will allocate funds to 48 frontline organisations throughout England and Wales. These organisations will deliver legal support to countless vulnerable individuals facing eviction, overwhelming debt, benefit disputes, and family breakdowns.

Notable charities and advice centres, such as Citizen’s Advice and Shelter Cymru, will be enhancing their provision of free legal assistance, both in person and online. This support aims to empower individuals by helping them understand their rights, address issues proactively, and prevent situations that could lead to homelessness, financial hardship, or unnecessary court engagement.

Early Intervention to Prevent Crisis

The investment in early support is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of problems escalating into crises, thus alleviating the burden on the court system. By equipping individuals with targeted resources and practical tools, the initiative seeks to make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Sarah Sackman KC, Minister for Courts and Legal Services, emphasised the importance of timely assistance: “When people face eviction, mounting debts, or family breakdown, obtaining the right help at the right moment can be transformative.” She highlighted that this investment will enable families to access reliable advice sooner, which is crucial for averting crises and allowing them the necessary space to regain stability.

Building on Previous Investments in Legal Support

This initiative follows a previous investment of over £25 million by the Government into legal support services, aimed at helping individuals tackle issues at an early stage to avoid crises and foster a more secure future for themselves and their families. The funding will be managed by the Access to Justice Foundation, reinforcing the Government’s broader objective of enhancing access to justice and ensuring that financial barriers do not obstruct individuals from seeking help.

Clare Carter, CEO of the Access to Justice Foundation, remarked on the pressing need for legal support: “Across England and Wales, too many individuals encounter legal challenges that impact every facet of their lives, from maintaining stable housing to supporting their families.” She stated that the organisations benefiting from this programme play a crucial role in providing essential support at critical moments. By investing in their long-term resilience, the aim is to ensure that more people can access the legal assistance they require while simultaneously developing a deeper understanding of effective strategies to improve access to justice.

A Comprehensive Approach to Family Financial Well-being

This initiative is part of the Government’s broader commitment to providing families with greater financial relief by addressing everyday expenses. This includes measures such as capped bus fares for transport and assistance with household energy costs, ultimately allowing more financial resources to remain within families and alleviating the strain on household budgets.

In conjunction with bolstering frontline services, this grant programme will also contribute to establishing a robust evidence base regarding effective legal support, thereby informing future investments and ensuring that assistance is directed towards those who need it the most.
