Significant Contract Extension for A400 Atlas Fleet
A substantial £190 million contract extension has been secured with Airbus, aimed at enhancing support for the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) A400M Atlas fleet. This agreement not only promises to sustain over 350 jobs across the UK but also aims to improve the operational capability of the fleet significantly.
Under the terms of the extension, the number of mission-capable A400M aircraft available daily is projected to rise from 10 to 13 by the conclusion of 2027. This enhancement represents a 30% improvement in overall fleet availability, marking a crucial step in bolstering Britain’s air defence capabilities.
Commitment to British Engineering and Job Security
Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, expressed confidence in the British engineering sector and the workforce at RAF Brize Norton and Carterton. He emphasised the importance of this contract extension in strengthening the RAF’s capacity for global operations and fulfilling NATO obligations, all while ensuring value for money for taxpayers.
The A400M Atlas aircraft plays a vital role in the UK’s air mobility strategy, facilitating a range of missions from humanitarian assistance to the rapid deployment of troops. The continued support provided at RAF Brize Norton guarantees that these aircraft will be ready to meet operational demands without disruption, furthering the government’s commitment to enhancing the UK’s defence industrial base.
Enhancing Operational Readiness for the Armed Forces
Air Commodore Si Young, Head of Air Mobility in National Armaments Materiel, highlighted that this contract will further enhance the availability of the A400M fleet. He noted that it builds on previous growth achievements, ensuring that the Armed Forces have the capabilities they require while providing excellent value for public funds. This partnership with Airbus reflects a shared commitment to the ongoing success and expansion of the A400M fleet.
The contract extension, which spans 31 months, will ensure that support services are in place until April 2029, sustaining over 240 Airbus staff and 110 primary subcontract personnel.
Airbus’ Commitment to Defence Readiness
Kata Escott, Managing Director of Airbus Defence and Space UK, articulated the company’s pride in being a reliable partner to the Ministry of Defence. She reaffirmed Airbus’s dedication to enhancing operational readiness and ensuring the A400M Atlas remains the backbone of air mobility for the RAF. The skilled teams at Airbus work closely with RAF personnel to maintain mission readiness.
This contract extension complements the Defence Investment Plan, which allocates £298 billion to UK defence over the next four years. This strategic investment is expected to bolster the UK’s defence sector, positioning it as a critical component of the nation’s economic revitalisation.
