New Development Partner Chosen for Digbeth Regeneration
Homes England has appointed Digbeth Loc Studios Ltd as its preferred partner for an ambitious project aimed at creating a vibrant new neighbourhood at Fazeley Street, situated in the heart of Digbeth, Birmingham. This decision, pending contract finalisation and a standstill period, marks a significant advance in the ongoing revitalisation of the area.
The proposed development is poised to enhance Birmingham’s burgeoning status as a national hub for film, television, and creative industries. By fostering a mixed-use environment, it aims to strengthen the foundations laid by established organisations such as BBC Studioworks, The Bond, The Custard Factory, and The Tea Factory, thereby cultivating a dynamic destination where creative enterprises, residents, and visitors can engage in collaboration and innovation.
Strengthening Digbeth’s Creative Identity
Jo Nugent, Executive Director for the Midlands at Homes England, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This is an exciting opportunity to build on Digbeth’s unique identity and growing reputation as a centre for creative excellence. Working closely with our partners, we want to deliver a place that celebrates the area’s heritage while creating new opportunities for people and businesses to thrive.”
Digbeth Loc Studios has been instrumental in establishing the locale as a prime destination for film and television production. The forthcoming development aims to create a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood that not only bolsters economic growth but also contributes to the delivery of new housing and enhances Birmingham’s stature as a centre of creative and cultural activity.
Collaboration for Regional Growth
As part of their expansion efforts, Digbeth Loc Studios is collaborating with the Mayor of the West Midlands and Birmingham City Council to support the creative industries in the region. This initiative is expected to unlock new housing, job opportunities, and investment, further solidifying the area’s potential.
Richard Parker, the Mayor of the West Midlands, reflected on the progress made, stating, “This time last year I announced a bold vision for Digbeth – that it would be bigger, better, and bolder than Manchester’s Media City. Today’s announcement by Homes England is another key milestone in that journey, which has seen Digbeth emerge over the last 12 months as a nationally significant hub for the creative industries.”
A Vision for a Dynamic Creative Quarter
Steven Knight, alongside the BBC and Production Central WM, has been influential in driving this transformation, which is gaining momentum. “These are exciting times for Digbeth. By continuing to invest in our amazing local talent, we can help grow our economy, create new jobs, and position the West Midlands at the forefront of the UK’s creative sector,” he remarked.
Councillor Roger Harmer, Leader of Birmingham City Council, acknowledged the importance of this project, stating, “This is great news and an important milestone in the continued regeneration of Digbeth, one of the most vibrant areas of the city. It complements the work we are already doing to improve the public realm and support its distinctive cultural identity.”
Future Plans for Fazeley Street
Steven Knight, Founder of Digbeth Loc Studios, highlighted the significance of the Fazeley Street project in Digbeth’s creative narrative. “Digbeth is already one of Birmingham’s most vibrant and distinctive neighbourhoods, and we are proud to have played a part in that at Digbeth Loc Studios, home to the new Peaky Blinders franchise,” he stated.
He added that with the BBC’s investment at Typhoo Wharf and the support from the local community of creative businesses, artists, and cultural organisations, there is now a unique opportunity to expedite the development of one of the UK’s most dynamic creative and cultural quarters. The goal is to create an environment where creative businesses can flourish and local talent can forge sustainable futures, further enhancing Birmingham’s global reputation in film and television production.
Building on a Legacy of Transformation
In the coming months, the development team plans to collaborate with Homes England, Birmingham City Council, the Mayor of the West Midlands, and the West Midlands Combined Authority to bring their vision to fruition. This project aims to build on Digbeth’s rich creative and industrial heritage while unlocking new opportunities for the city and its inhabitants.
The development team has a proven track record, having previously transformed the Banana Warehouse into the Masterchef studio and led the redevelopment of notable sites such as Television Centre and the Truman Brewery in London. This project is part of a broader ambition to establish Digbeth as a globally recognised destination for the creative sector and a leading example of creative-led regeneration.
