Allegations of Espionage at OpenAI
A recent criminal complaint has revealed alarming allegations involving an engineer from OpenAI, who is accused of concealing an audio recording device within a roll of toilet paper. This device was reportedly placed behind a monitor in a conference room at one of the company’s San Francisco offices.
The individual at the centre of the allegations, Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi citizen and permanent resident of the United States, allegedly spent several weeks consulting with an unspecified “productivity agent” and an “AI chatbot”. His aim was to strategise a purported surveillance operation. He is said to have utilised an internal OpenAI tool to inquire about scheduled meetings in the targeted conference room.
Furthermore, it is claimed that Alfozan made use of a chatbot account linked to his spouse to pose various technical questions regarding the installation of covert audio recording equipment, as detailed by federal prosecutors and the court documents. Security personnel at OpenAI also reportedly discovered an additional recording device in Alfozan’s bag within the office.
Initial Court Appearance and Charges
Alfozan has yet to be reached for comment. On Tuesday, he appeared for the first time before the Federal District Court in San Francisco, where he faces a charge of “using an electronic, mechanical, or other device to intercept oral communications”. Should he be found guilty, Alfozan could face a sentence of up to five years in prison. He joined OpenAI in July 2025 and was terminated from his position just last Friday, coinciding with his arrest.
The FBI’s director, Kash Patel, stated in a release that Alfozan’s intention was to “secretly capture confidential communications related to the company’s superintelligence technology”. However, neither the prosecution nor OpenAI has yet provided clarity regarding a potential motive behind his actions.
OpenAI has commented, stating, “At this time, we have no indications that this individual improperly accessed or removed weights from models, source code, or customer data”. The company emphasised its commitment to safeguarding its technology, data, and personnel, deeming it a matter of national importance.
The Discovery of the Listening Device
According to reports, the listening device was purportedly “hidden in toilet paper” and inserted into a USB port located at the back of a television in the conference room. A presumed LinkedIn profile indicates that Alfozan previously worked for a logistics startup and at Meta. In a recent podcast interview, he claimed to have been part of a group of Saudi engineers in Silicon Valley providing consulting services to Saudi organisations.
The profile also suggests that Alfozan is a part-time venture capital partner at RAED Ventures, a firm based in Saudi Arabia. Efforts to obtain comments from RAED Ventures and Meta have yet to yield a response.
Last year, the Trump administration signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia that granted the kingdom access to advanced chips and artificial intelligence technologies that may otherwise be restricted for national security reasons. Saudi investment firms continue to be a significant source of capital for American technology companies.
Details of the Alleged Surveillance Operation
As per the complaint, it is alleged that Alfozan positioned the listening device “no later than 28 September 2026”. The conference room in question is accessible exclusively to executives and their assistants, and is frequently utilised for “internal leadership meetings”, “technical and product sessions”, and “external informational meetings” with business partners and government officials, as noted in the complaint. It is often employed for discussions involving “highly confidential” information, encompassing research data, product details, business strategy, and government relations.
OpenAI has described the recording device as “sophisticated”. Authorities have identified the equipment Alfozan allegedly installed as a Seeed XIAO ESP32-S3 Sense, a compact development board featuring a detachable camera sensor, digital microphone, and microSD storage, available for purchase for $13.99. Attempts by OpenAI’s security team to export the data stored on the microSD card were unsuccessful due to encryption.
Following the discovery of the device, OpenAI alerted the FBI and was able to connect it to Alfozan after reviewing chat logs and surveillance recordings. The company gradually restricted his access to internal systems during the investigation.
Further Findings and Anomalies
The security team at OpenAI reportedly found a bag that Alfozan had left unattended in a printer room on 5 October. This bag contained a second encrypted Seeed listening device along with other personal belongings, including his wallet. Prosecutors indicate that Alfozan later reported the bag as lost to OpenAI and retrieved it from the company’s lost and found.
Following this, he allegedly contacted anonymous personnel at OpenAI to inform them that several items he believed were in the bag were missing, including a credit card, approximately $500 in cash, and two AirPods. Notably, he failed to mention the second listening device, which had been removed from the bag by OpenAI’s security team.
