Chief of the General Staff Addresses the Grand Opening of Telford Gun Hall

Celebrating a Historic Revival in Artillery Manufacturing

Distinguished guests, it is with great honour that I stand before you in Telford today. This occasion marks a significant milestone with the revival of large-calibre gun barrel production in the United Kingdom, a capability that has regrettably been absent from our shores for many years.

It is indeed a matter of regret, as Great Britain boasts a rich heritage in artillery manufacturing. The Royal Arsenal at Woolwich has long been a beacon of excellence in this field, providing the artillery that has influenced the outcomes of numerous conflicts, from the Napoleonic Wars through the World Wars and into the Cold War era.

Lessons from History on National Defence

This historical narrative serves as a reminder that while armies, navies, and air forces may secure victories in battles, it is the unity of nations that leads to success in war. The current global landscape has highlighted this lesson with renewed urgency. Modern warfare is characterised by an unprecedented consumption of equipment and munitions. For instance, in Ukraine, both factions are expending tens of thousands of artillery rounds daily, creating a level of firepower and battlefield lethality that drones alone cannot achieve.

To adequately defend against potential threats, we must ensure that we can replace and repair our military systems at the same pace as their usage. However, developing industrial capacity cannot be achieved in the midst of a crisis; it requires foresight and preparation long before conflicts arise.

A Commitment to National Security

The establishment of this facility is a crucial advancement towards achieving that goal. It not only facilitates the modernisation of our ground forces but also plays a vital role in restoring the skills and industrial capabilities essential for our future military strength. Moreover, it sends a powerful message of intent—a steadfast commitment to the collaboration between government, industry, and the armed forces in building a national arsenal that safeguards our security and empowers our soldiers to protect the values we hold dear.
