Empowering Bangladeshi Communities with Clean Solar Energy Solutions

Transforming Energy Access in Bangladesh

For over ten years, Bangladesh has made significant strides in providing reliable and clean electricity through its Solar Home System programme, extending vital energy access to millions who reside outside the national electricity grid. This initiative has enabled households to transition away from environmentally harmful sources like diesel and kerosene, marking a significant shift towards sustainable energy solutions.

UK Initiatives Supporting Renewable Energy

The Carbon Initiative for Development (Ci-Dev) programme, backed by UK support, is instrumental in building upon these achievements. It facilitates clean energy projects in Bangladesh to generate revenue by selling carbon credits, which reflect actual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. This approach not only strengthens the financial viability of these projects but also lays the groundwork for attracting further investments. By prioritising long-term, environmentally sustainable practices, the Ci-Dev programme encourages necessary actions to combat climate change effectively.

Impact on Households and Emissions Reduction

To date, approximately 3.3 million solar home systems have been implemented in Bangladesh under the Ci-Dev programme, providing a solution to frequent power outages and lowering household energy expenses. The UK’s support has led to improved energy access for over 10 million individuals, contributing to the installation of more than 340 megawatts of clean energy capacity. This initiative has also resulted in a significant reduction of over 1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, a figure that is comparable to 4% of London’s annual total emissions.

Unlocking Financial Opportunities for Sustainable Development

Through initiatives that enable countries like Bangladesh to develop the necessary capabilities and frameworks to access new financial resources via carbon markets, UK support plays a crucial role in fostering sustainable development. This assistance ensures that clean energy projects can continue to offer affordable electricity to underserved communities, thereby enhancing their resilience and quality of life.
