Charity Initiative by ‘First Dates’ Maître D’ Launches New Restaurant Inside Staffordshire Women’s Prison

New Training Restaurant Opens in Women’s Prison

In a pioneering initiative, the charity The Right Course, founded by Fred Sirieix, known for his role as maître d’ on Channel 4’s ‘First Dates’, has inaugurated a training restaurant within HMP Drake Hall, a women’s prison in the West Midlands. Named ‘Flavours Unlocked’, this establishment aims to provide inmates with essential hospitality skills, fostering genuine pathways to employment upon their release.

The initiative has garnered support from notable partners, including Hilton and the Government’s Hospitality Support Fund. The programme not only seeks to equip participants with industry-standard training and recognised qualifications but also aims to alleviate the chronic staff shortages faced by the hospitality sector. By doing so, it hopes to reduce rates of reoffending, offering inmates valuable skills and employment opportunities that can significantly change their life trajectories.

Support from Government and Industry Leaders

The launch of the restaurant was marked by the presence of Kate Dearden, the Minister for the Future of Work, alongside Fred Sirieix and other influential figures dedicated to transforming lives through hospitality. Dearden highlighted the importance of skilled staff in the hospitality sector, stating, “The Right Course is a fantastic charity, improving the lives of its participants. Working with charities and employers, we are determined to unlock talent wherever it is found and allow people to build a better future for themselves, businesses and their communities.”

Catherine McKinnell, Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, echoed these sentiments, affirming that education and employment are crucial for rehabilitation. She remarked that initiatives like The Right Course exemplify the positive outcomes achievable when prisons collaborate with charities and businesses, leading to fewer reoffenders and enhanced community safety.

Creating Opportunities for Inmates

Fred Sirieix, as the Founder and Trustee of The Right Course, expressed his commitment to shaping a conducive environment for learners to transform their lives. He emphasised the importance of acquiring confidence, skills, and aspirations that enable individuals to contribute positively to society. “I want our graduates to be the best so that our employer partners snap them up and see them as valued members of their team,” he stated, encouraging the participants to fully embrace the opportunities presented to them.

Stephen Cassidy, Senior Vice President for Hilton in the UK and Ireland, underscored the hotel chain’s mission to create inclusive opportunities. Through the partnership with The Right Course, he noted that ‘Flavours Unlocked’ serves as a practical avenue for women in custody to receive hospitality training, thereby paving the way for meaningful employment. He remarked on the potential for talent to emerge from diverse backgrounds, reinforcing the notion that with the right support, the hospitality industry can offer rewarding, long-term careers.

Addressing Challenges in the Hospitality Sector

The hospitality industry remains a cornerstone of the UK’s economy, but it faces ongoing challenges that demand multifaceted solutions. The Right Course presents a tangible method to create a steady pipeline of trained and motivated staff, while simultaneously providing individuals who have experienced incarceration a second chance at life. By focusing on essential skills such as communication, customer service, and teamwork, the programme aims to reduce reoffending rates and empower participants to reintegrate into society successfully.
