Severn Stoke’s Flood Risk Mitigation Measures Ahead of Winter 2023

Completion of the Severn Stoke Flood Scheme

The Severn Stoke Flood Scheme has been successfully completed ahead of its anticipated schedule, significantly reducing flood risks for homes, businesses, and essential infrastructure as winter approaches. This initiative is part of the government’s broader flood prevention programme, which is set to invest a record £10.5 billion by 2036, aiming to bolster the economy while safeguarding nearly 900,000 properties across the nation.

The project was a collaborative effort between the Environment Agency and Worcestershire County Council, in conjunction with Alun Griffiths Construction Ltd. It involved the construction of a new flood bank to the west of the village, enhancements to drainage systems for improved surface water management, and the raising of a road that intersects the flood bank.

In addition, landscaping efforts such as tree planting, habitat creation, and fencing will be carried out in the upcoming months, further enhancing the local environment.

Government Investment and Local Impact

Charlie Chandler, the Area Flood Risk Manager for the West Midlands at the Environment Agency, emphasised the significance of this initiative in providing vital flood protection. The government’s extensive investment in flood defence not only aims to protect properties but also contributes to economic growth by creating thousands of jobs and mitigating potential financial losses from flooding.

Councillor Josh Robinson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities at Worcestershire County Council, highlighted the importance of this scheme for the local community. The residents of Severn Stoke are all too familiar with the disruptions caused by flooding, and the timely completion of the flood alleviation measures is expected to offer enhanced security and reassurance as the risk of flooding typically increases during the winter months.

Historical Context of Flooding in Severn Stoke

Severn Stoke has experienced a long and challenging history with flooding from the River Severn, with recent winters seeing significant impacts on the community. During severe flood events, 18 properties, as well as the local church and pub, have been adversely affected, along with vital transport routes such as the A38.

The financial backing for the Severn Stoke Flood Scheme comprised approximately £5 million from the Environment Agency, supplemented by an additional £250,000 from Worcestershire County Council. This investment underscores the commitment to enhancing flood resilience in the region.

Looking Forward: Community Reassurance and Resources

Beyond the immediate benefits of flood protection, the government’s flood programme aims to stimulate economic activity by safeguarding homes and businesses, thus allowing for the development of new housing and commercial ventures.

In addition to the flood scheme, the community will have access to the war memorial for Armistice Day gatherings on the weekend of November 7 and 8. Furthermore, the Environment Agency has established a ‘one-stop shop’ for flooding guidance, encouraging residents to stay informed and prepared this winter, particularly regarding flood warnings.
