New Discovery of a Wild Cat Species in Bolivia
A team of international scientists has made a remarkable discovery by identifying, naming, and describing a new living species of feline, marking the first such finding in over a century. The animal, now designated as Leopardus tilcayo, or the tilcayo cat, was located in the lush Yungas region of Bolivia. This discovery significantly enhances the understanding of the so-called tiger cats, a group of small wild felines native to South America.
The male specimen was initially found in 2016 by local residents, who raised the young cat as a domestic pet for nearly a year. However, its caretakers soon recognised hunting behaviours and communication patterns that suggested innate wild instincts. Consequently, it was believed to belong to the tiger cat group, which encompasses various species of South American wild cats.
Later, the animal, affectionately named “Tigrino,” was transferred to the La Senda Verde sanctuary, where specialists began to analyse its physical traits. Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, an explorer with National Geographic and one of the study’s authors, observed that the small-muzzled feline, with long whiskers and short, rounded ears, exhibited a coat pattern of larger spots akin to those of a leopard, distinguishing it from any other species in the initially assumed group.
Genetic Analysis Reveals a Unique Species
Eduardo Eizirik, an evolutionary biologist at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul and the principal author of the study, explained that these wild cats can be classified as cryptic species. This term refers to animals that bear a resemblance to one another but possess distinct genetic differences and independent evolutionary pathways. “This visual similarity has led to prolonged confusion among different species, often classifying them as a single entity,” he clarified.
To further investigate, researchers conducted a comprehensive DNA analysis of 38 felines from various regions of South America to compare their genetic characteristics. Among these, eight specimens were preserved in museums, while 26 represented different living populations of tiger cats.
Until recently, tiger cats were thought to comprise just one species. However, the findings of this new research, published in Current Biology, have revealed that the group actually consists of five distinct species, including the newly identified Leopardus tilcayo. “Tigrino,” measuring 46 centimetres in length and weighing just under 1.5 kilograms, has become the official representative of this new species.
Understanding the Leopardus tilcayo
Currently, scientists have limited knowledge regarding the dietary habits, behaviour, reproductive patterns, population size, and exact distribution of this species. Nevertheless, genetic analysis indicated that Leopardus tilcayo diverged evolutionarily from its relatives approximately 1.4 million years ago.
The study also identified another population warranting its own taxonomic recognition, namely the tiger cats of the Peruvian Yungas, which the researchers classified as a new subspecies and named Leopardus tigrinus antisuyo.
Eizirik emphasises that these findings underscore the vast unexplored facets of nature. “Even among charismatic and well-known animals such as felines, some species can remain undiscovered for centuries. Discovering and understanding these species is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies,” he asserts.
The Importance of Conservation Efforts
The authors of the study contend that the identification of new species not only enriches the understanding of feline evolution in Latin America but also provides essential insights for their protection. At least two species within the tiger cat group are classified as “vulnerable” to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), primarily due to declining populations.
Experts warn that these felines face numerous threats, including habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting, and disease transmission from domestic animals. Additionally, many individuals inhabit areas particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change.
Eizirik concludes by stressing the importance of raising public awareness about the existence of undiscovered species, even within such iconic groups as cats. “The fact that many unknown species remain at risk of extinction before we even have the chance to discover them conveys a vital message,” he remarks.
