Free Bus Travel for Under 16s This August
Starting today, children under the age of 16 can travel for free on local buses throughout August, a measure aimed at alleviating the financial burden many families face due to the current cost-of-living crisis. This initiative is part of the broader Great British Summer Savings campaign, which also includes a £2 cap on bus fares, ensuring that millions benefit from reduced transport costs, saving up to a third on their journeys.
As families seek to enjoy outings to museums, beaches, and national parks, this provision of free bus travel will provide a much-needed financial reprieve during the school holidays, allowing more opportunities for leisure activities at a lower cost.
Exciting Days Out for Families
Free bus travel for children is now in effect, enabling families to embark on memorable adventures without the worry of transportation expenses. This initiative runs until the end of August and is designed to facilitate affordable outings as part of the government’s commitment to support families over the summer months. Alongside free bus travel, families can also benefit from reduced prices on children’s meals at restaurants, theatre tickets, and entry to various attractions including theme parks and adventure centres.
Families can explore an array of captivating destinations, from thrilling theme parks and historic castles to serene wildlife watching in picturesque locations like the Lake District. The complementary bus routes provide easy access to these attractions, making it simpler for families to plan enjoyable day trips.
Notable Bus Routes for Summer Adventures
Some of the included routes provide exciting opportunities for exploration, such as the X46 from Hull to York, perfect for a haunting visit to The York Dungeon, or the Carousel 37 from High Wycombe, which offers a chance to see deer in Windsor Great Park and visit the iconic Windsor Castle. Other notable services include the 54 bus from Leicester, leading to the fascinating National Space Centre, and local services like the Coaster 12, Regency 28, and Breeze 77, which take passengers directly to Brighton’s beautiful seafront.
For those keen on outdoor activities, the 23 or 24 bus from Birmingham to Woodgate Valley Country Park is an excellent option, offering pony trekking, cycling, and a visit to the Urban Farm’s animals. Additionally, families can take advantage of Europe’s longest bus route, the 11 service, which has been operational for a century and connects to Cadbury World, where discounted entry is available this summer.
Government Support for Families
This initiative not only provides free travel for children but also aligns with the government’s recent announcement to cap bus fares at £2 from January, facilitating broader savings for all passengers. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasised the importance of these measures in providing families with essential relief from financial pressures, ensuring they can enjoy quality time together during the holidays.
Financial Secretary to the Treasury, James Murray, highlighted the variety of attractions and dining options available, asserting that families should not miss out on summer experiences due to financial constraints. By offering free bus travel and reducing VAT on children’s meals and attraction tickets, the government aims to create lasting memories for families this summer.

Rob Parkinson, Chief Executive of the Family Holiday Charity, noted that travel should be an integral part of a family outing, filled with excitement rather than financial anxiety. He welcomed the initiative that enables children to travel for free on public transport, expressing hope that it will enhance family experiences throughout the UK.
Andrew Stokes, Director at VisitEngland, expressed enthusiasm for the free travel scheme, which supports families in exploring England’s diverse attractions in a sustainable manner. He encouraged families to take advantage of the summer to discover the beauty of seaside destinations, scenic countryside, and vibrant urban areas.
Easy Access to Discounts and Offers
To assist families in navigating the extensive range of offers available through the Great British Summer Savings campaign, the government has launched an interactive tool. This resource allows families to find the best deals in their postcode, showcasing local restaurants, theatres, museums, and other attractions that are offering seasonal discounts.
Typically, child fares range from £1 to £2, but during this summer, children aged 5 to 15 can travel for free on most local buses, making outings more accessible. This initiative builds on previous efforts to enhance bus services, with local leaders gaining greater control over routes and a £3 billion investment aimed at improving services nationwide over the next three years.
