Strengthening Humanitarian Access to Gaza
During his inaugural visit to Egypt, the new Minister for the Middle East, Stephen Doughty MP, emphasised the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to be delivered to Gaza without hindrance. The visit, which lasted two days, focused on enhancing cooperation regarding regional security and stability, particularly in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Minister Doughty’s visit highlighted Egypt’s pivotal role in facilitating humanitarian efforts, as well as the United Kingdom’s commitment to collaborating with partners to ensure aid reaches those in need. He specifically visited humanitarian support facilities in Al-Arish, located near the Gaza border, where he witnessed the extensive logistical operations in place. This included over £2 million in UK-funded support directed towards the Egyptian Red Crescent, aimed at delivering essential aid to affected populations.
Calls for Increased Humanitarian Aid
In his remarks, Minister Doughty stated, “This UK Government has been at the forefront of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza and in diplomatic efforts to increase aid flows. However, the current levels of assistance are simply insufficient. We have reinstated support to UNWRA and are collaborating closely with key partners like the Red Crescent, yet it is crucial that barriers to aid are removed.”
He expressed gratitude for Egypt’s partnership in this endeavour, reinforcing the necessity for Israel to grant rapid, safe, and unobstructed access for humanitarian aid to avert further suffering in Gaza. “The distressing reports of death and suffering from Gaza have resonated deeply with people across Britain. It is for this reason that I made this my first visit to the region and continue to urge Israel to facilitate aid delivery,” he asserted.
Commitment to Regional Stability and Recovery Efforts
The urgency of the situation in Gaza was underscored during Minister Doughty’s discussions, where he noted that, on average, one child has lost their life every day since the ceasefire. The UK is dedicated to alleviating the humanitarian crisis, having allocated over £127 million in support for Palestine during the current financial year.
Alongside his humanitarian discussions, Minister Doughty engaged with Egyptian officials, including Foreign Minister Dr Badr Abdelatty and Deputy Foreign Ministers Mohamed Abu Bakr and Nabil Habashi. These meetings reiterated the UK’s commitment to working collaboratively with Egypt and other regional partners to mitigate instability and protect UK interests.
New Migration Partnership Enhances Cooperation
Furthermore, the Minister signed a pioneering partnership agreement on migration between the UK and Egypt, marking the first initiative focusing on migration cooperation between the two nations. This agreement aims to significantly reduce the time required to return Egyptian nationals without residency rights in the UK by up to 90%. This move follows a recent £9 million increase in UK funding intended to assist North African countries in managing migration challenges exacerbated by regional conflicts.
Overall, this visit underscored the importance of the UK-Egypt relationship in addressing key priorities, ranging from regional security and migration issues to humanitarian aid and economic resilience, ultimately benefiting the British populace.
