Appointment of New Chief Digital and Information Officer
Dan Rodenhurst has been appointed as the new Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO), taking the helm of the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) digital and data teams. In this pivotal role, he will steer the implementation of the digital, data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives outlined in the Defence Investment Plan (DIP).
The scope of his responsibilities encompasses optimising a significant £5.5 billion investment into the MOD’s ‘Digital Backbone’, alongside £1.8 billion allocated for the digital targeting web and over £200 million dedicated to enhancing AI capabilities. Rodenhurst’s extensive background, which spans more than 25 years in the security and defence sector, positions him well for success in this role.
Extensive Experience in Digital Transformation
Rodenhurst’s career has seen him lead numerous large-scale technology, cloud, and digital transformation programmes in both public and private sectors. His expertise includes managing teams focused on technical operations, classified cloud environments, AI platforms, and multi-agency services within mission-critical scenarios.
As he prepares to lead Defence’s digital and data teams, Rodenhurst will ensure a unified strategy for data, AI, and digital integration throughout UK Defence. This includes leveraging the substantial investments from the DIP to bolster Defence’s digital infrastructure and improve operational effectiveness. Notably, a £100 million investment is earmarked for Project FRONTIER AI, which aims to establish a lasting framework for decision-support applications across Defence.
Driving AI Initiatives and Technological Innovation
Under Rodenhurst’s guidance, the AI teams will be at the forefront of developing the Defence AI Centre (DAIC) and Taskforce RAID. The DAIC has been established as the MOD’s centre for AI delivery, while Taskforce RAID is mobilised to facilitate genuine change and provide battlefield advantages for personnel in the field.
In September, Rodenhurst will ascend to the role of Director General within the National Armaments Director (NAD) Group, which is tasked with the development, delivery, and sustenance of the UK’s national arsenal and defence estate. In this capacity, he will lead a team of over 3,000 specialists in digital, data, cyber, and technology across Defence.
Support and Expectations from Leadership
Rupert Pearce, the National Armaments Director, expressed his enthusiasm for Rodenhurst’s appointment, recognising his exceptional experience in spearheading large-scale digital transformation efforts. Pearce emphasised that Rodenhurst will be instrumental in harnessing digital, data, and AI to achieve system efficiencies and military advantages across Defence.
With the launch of the Defence Investment Plan, Rodenhurst’s leadership will be critical at a crucial juncture for Defence. Pearce noted that he is confident Rodenhurst will enhance partnerships across Defence, government, and industry as they work to modernise digital capabilities in line with the ambitions outlined in the Strategic Defence Review.
Looking Ahead with Optimism
As a member of the Defence Executive Committee, Rodenhurst will collaborate with senior leaders across Defence to provide strategic advice and recommendations concerning digital and data capabilities.

Rodenhurst succeeds Charles Forte, who retired from his position as Defence CDIO in June after eight years of service. Claire Fry has been appointed as the interim CDIO and will continue in this role until Rodenhurst officially assumes his responsibilities in September.
