Andy Lord Takes the Helm as Interim Chair of NAD Group Advisory Board
Andy Lord has been appointed as the Interim Chair of the National Armaments Director (NAD) Group Advisory Board. Currently serving as the Commissioner of Transport for London, Lord is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe and reliable transport services across the capital.
Since joining Transport for London (TfL) in 2019, he has progressed from the Managing Director of London Underground to Chief Operating Officer, eventually assuming the role of Commissioner. Throughout his career, Lord has held a variety of senior positions in engineering, operations, and customer service.
In addition to his current role, Andy Lord served as a Non-Executive Director and Board member for Defence Equipment & Support from 2018 until March of this year. His appointment by Luke Pollard, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, is set to last until April 30, 2027.
NAD Group’s Governance Model Transformation
This new appointment comes at a pivotal time for the NAD Group, which is working towards establishing a more streamlined and integrated governance model. This initiative aims to bolster effective decision-making, enhance accountability, and improve the management of performance and risk throughout the organisation.
Rupert Pearce, the National Armaments Director, expressed his enthusiasm regarding Lord’s appointment, stating, “I am delighted to welcome Andy as Interim Chair of the NAD Group Advisory Board. His extensive experience within our organisation, coupled with his leadership of large, complex entities, will be invaluable as we strive to develop the NAD Group into an integrated, mission-focused organisation.”
Role and Objectives of the Advisory Board
The primary function of the new Advisory Board is to provide independent support and constructive challenge to the NAD and its senior leadership team. This will ensure the effective management of strategy, performance, and risk across the Group.
Upon accepting his new role, Andy Lord remarked, “I am thrilled to take on the position of Interim Advisory Board Chair. I have witnessed the expertise and dedication present across the organisations that comprise the NAD Group, and I understand the critical contributions they make to Defence. My aim is to harness these strengths, uniting expertise from across the Group to create even greater impact.”
He further expressed his enthusiasm for supporting the leadership team in driving integration, transformation, and operational excellence in alignment with the organisation’s mission.
Strategic Oversight and Non-Executive Members’ Contributions
The Advisory Board will offer a strategic, Group-wide perspective, assessing the organisation’s trajectory and identifying areas where additional support or intervention may be required. Such contributions are essential to the NAD Group’s ambition of fostering a high-support, high-challenge environment, where leaders can make empowered decisions while remaining accountable for their outcomes.
Joining Andy Lord are the NAD Group’s Non-Executive Members (NEMs): Robert MacLeod, Tony Meggs, Tracy Sheedy, Carolyn Battersby, Claire Hawkings, and Sarah Albon. The NEMs are not part of the NAD Group’s executive management structure; rather, their value lies in their independence and the diverse experience they bring to the Board.
To support its operations, the Board will be aided by three specialist committees that focus on nominations and remuneration, audit and risk assurance, and safety and security.
Commitment to Governance Standards
This appointment aligns with the Governance Code on Public Appointments, ensuring that the selection process adheres to established standards of transparency and accountability.
