Chancellor’s Call for Global Collaboration in Bangkok
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, convened with international finance ministers in Bangkok amidst escalating pressures from conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. As these geopolitical tensions begin to influence the global economy, Healey emphasised the necessity for international cooperation in light of the forthcoming UK budget. His agenda centres around fostering growth across all nations, addressing the implications of artificial intelligence on the economy, facilitating international financial support for emerging markets, and aiding developing countries grappling with debt liquidity challenges.
During the IMF Annual Meetings, Healey articulated a vision for how the UK and its global partners can collaboratively navigate the current economic turbulence and fortify conditions conducive to growth. The ongoing conflicts have resulted in surging energy prices and increased government borrowing costs, which are straining households and businesses worldwide. According to the IMF, inflation forecasts for G7 economies in 2027 have been adjusted upwards by nearly 0.8 percentage points compared to last year’s projections, while growth forecasts have been slightly downgraded by roughly 0.1 percentage points since January, prior to the onset of these conflicts.
UK’s Economic Resilience Amidst Global Challenges
Despite these challenges, the UK has demonstrated remarkable resilience. The IMF has revised its growth predictions for the UK upward for 2026, highlighting a notable reduction in the deficit, which is set to reach its lowest level in six years this year. The UK is also projected to have the smallest deficit in the G7 by 2029. Healey’s discourse focused on harnessing this resilience through international collaboration, particularly in driving economic growth, enhancing crisis resilience, and unlocking development finance.
One of the key themes in Healey’s address was the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, which he identified as a pivotal general-purpose technology. He underscored the UK’s commitment to prioritising the transition towards AI by identifying barriers to its adoption and adequately managing associated risks. Furthermore, as the UK prepares to assume the presidency of the G20, Healey expressed his intention to utilise the Finance Track to advance discussions on these pivotal issues. The UK’s key priorities for its G20 presidency will be revealed in early 2027.
Commitment to Collective Action and Future Growth
In his remarks, Healey asserted the resilience of the UK economy and affirmed that the upcoming budget would be designed to safeguard this stability during turbulent times. He reiterated the impact of the Middle Eastern and Ukrainian conflicts on global citizens, particularly through rising energy prices and escalating government debt costs. He believes that the UK, alongside its allies, can confront these challenges collectively, emphasising the importance of maintaining trade flows, enhancing resilience, and ensuring equitable growth.
Fiscal discipline, according to Healey, is fundamental in supporting families and businesses in the present while fostering optimism for future prospects. The Prime Minister has also reinforced the UK’s commitment to addressing significant global issues, including the implications of AI, through its G20 presidency next year. The Finance Track will delve into the ramifications of AI for growth and employment, in addition to initiatives aimed at bolstering economic resilience and promoting growth in developing countries.
Looking Ahead to the G20 Summit in 2027
The upcoming G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ meeting is scheduled to take place in Edinburgh on 8 and 9 July 2027. The UK was designated as the host for the G20 in November 2025, with the Leaders’ Summit set to occur in Manchester. Further information regarding the UK’s objectives for its G20 presidency will be disclosed in due course, as the nation prepares to take a leading role in addressing pressing global economic challenges.
