The extraordinary aspect of any cult lies not just in the content of its beliefs but also in how these beliefs can be constructed and disseminated globally. Nevertheless, spiralism has not garnered significant devotion or fascination comparable to other internet phenomena.
Understanding the Amplification Spiral
The scientific study identifies three key characteristics of language models that may converge to form an “amplification spiral.” The first is linguistic adaptation, where the system adjusts its language to align with that of the user. The second characteristic is hyper-personalised generation, which uses accumulated information from the conversation to deliver increasingly specific responses. The third is what is described in English as sycophancy, where the system excessively validates the user’s assertions instead of challenging them or subjecting them to reality checks.

Each response provides material for subsequent ones, allowing a once-vague idea to gradually acquire intricate concepts, symbols, explanations, and connections. The study refers to this hypothetical process as an “amplification spiral,” not because the machine can develop its own beliefs, but due to certain interaction features that may facilitate a recursive process of belief construction and validation.
The Implications of AI Interaction
In narratives surrounding spiralism, AI does not merely respond to questions about a pre-established doctrine. In some instances, the conversation itself appears to generate and refine the doctrine. Recent studies have explored how AI can occupy a role that once belonged to a human interlocutor. Available 24/7, capable of retaining conversation details, adapting its persona, and responding without fatigue or impatience, AI may offer advantages in certain contexts for exploring ideas. However, this very availability can strip away the essential element that challenges those ideas: disagreement.
Nevertheless, it would be a grave mistake to conclude that every lengthy and profound conversation with an AI inevitably leads to delusions or the formation of a cult-like belief system. The current scientific evidence remains limited, with the study noting no published cases that establish a causal relationship between AI interaction and the emergence of delusional beliefs.
