A Royal Celebration of UK-India Relations
His Majesty’s admiration for the people and culture of India is widely recognised, with particular praise for the nation’s leadership on climate issues, which he holds in high regard. The King has consistently advocated for a deeper partnership between the United Kingdom and India. With the historic Free Trade Agreement, known as the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), set to take effect, 2026 is shaping up to be a remarkable year for this relationship.
The recent gala event, held in honour of the King’s birthday, saw the attendance of several prominent UK Secretaries of State, including Dame Angela Eagle, Douglas Alexander, and Jonathan Reynolds. Joining them was a formidable delegation comprising eight mayors and leaders from northern England, as well as key figures from the business and academic sectors. Dr Jitendra Singh, India’s Minister of Science and Technology, was invited as the Chief Guest for the occasion.
Strengthening Ties Through Celebration
Lindy Cameron, the British High Commissioner to India, remarked on the significance of the event, stating, “The King’s Birthday Party provides us with an opportunity to honour His Majesty, a dedicated environmentalist and a proponent of stronger UK-India ties. Just like the Sonoma tree presented by Prime Minister Modi last year, our partnership has flourished in ambition and strength in 2026, coinciding with the launch of our historic Free Trade Agreement. It is a pleasure to celebrate both His Majesty and our collaborative efforts with many friends and advocates of the UK-India relationship in Delhi.”
The large delegation visiting India for the King’s Birthday Party underscores the importance of this relationship for the entire United Kingdom. The trade agreement has unlocked new avenues for growth across the nation, creating jobs and attracting investments in various sectors, including advanced manufacturing, clean energy, technology, and life sciences. This initiative supports universities and businesses from all corners of the UK as they seek to engage with India as a long-term partner in investment, exports, and innovation.
An Evening of Culture and Innovation
The attendees were treated to a captivating live performance by Indian soprano Anusha Merrin, a recent graduate of Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music. The event showcased the finest British cuisine, beverages, and innovations, including luxury vehicles such as the Bentley Continental GT, DBX 707 Aston Martin, and Range Rover. A live culinary demonstration featuring Scottish Salmon by Chef Vineet Bhatia MBE, an ambassador for the GREAT Britain and Northern Ireland campaign, added a delightful touch to the evening.
This year’s King’s Birthday Party in Delhi was made possible through the generous sponsorship of numerous organisations, including HSBC India, BAE Systems, Queen Elizabeth’s Global Schools in Gurugram, Virgin Atlantic, Baker McKenzie, bp, MBDA, British Airways, Shell India, Aston Martin New Delhi, Bentley Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Bacardi India Pvt Ltd, and several others.
Looking Ahead to Future Collaborations
High-resolution images from the event will be made available for public use on Flickr. His Majesty The King celebrated his official 78th birthday on 13 June 2026, with British Embassies and High Commissions worldwide holding similar celebrations.
The King’s most recent official visit to India took place in November 2019, where he focused on British-India relations, emphasising sustainable markets, climate change, and social finance. In conjunction with this gala, trade delegations, educational leaders, and Northern Mayors are currently visiting India to build on the UK-India Free Trade Agreement and forge new connections with Indian counterparts. The Great North delegation included prominent mayors from various regions, highlighting the collaborative spirit of this initiative.
