Project for the Removal of the SS Richard Montgomery Mast

Successful Completion of Mast Removal Project

I am pleased to announce that the mast removal project for the SS Richard Montgomery has been successfully concluded, with all three masts having been effectively removed and transported to the Historic Dockyard Chatham. This vessel, a cargo ship from World War II, tragically sank in the Thames Estuary in 1944 while carrying approximately 1,400 tonnes of munitions.

The decision to remove the masts was made following recommendations from an expert advisory group tasked with evaluating the management of the wreck. Over time, the masts posed a considerable load on the ship’s structure, and their removal has markedly reduced this risk, thereby facilitating the long-term safety management of the site.

Expertise in Complex Project Management

This undertaking was no small feat, requiring the expertise of specialists in programme management, engineering, and risk assessment to navigate the unique challenges associated with the site. Remarkably, the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, a testament to the effective collaboration between the Department for Transport (DfT), the United States Maritime Administration, industry stakeholders, and local partners. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those whose skills and dedication contributed to the project’s successful execution.

Preserving Historical Artefacts

In recognition of the SS Richard Montgomery’s historical importance and its significant role in supporting the Allied forces during World War II, the recovered masts and related artefacts have been entrusted to the Historic Dockyard Chatham for conservation. This initiative will help safeguard a vital part of our regional heritage for generations to come.

Ongoing Monitoring and Safety Measures

The wreck will continue to be monitored and managed under the existing exclusion zone, ensuring public safety remains paramount. Current restrictions on aircraft operating in the vicinity of the site will also remain in place.

The government is steadfast in its commitment to the safe and responsible management of the SS Richard Montgomery, with the safety of the public remaining our utmost priority.
