New Opportunities for Young People
Sainsbury’s is set to launch an ambitious “Modern Work Experience Programme” aimed at providing approximately 10,000 work experience and skills opportunities for young individuals across the UK. This initiative seeks to empower young people by helping them gain valuable experience, build confidence, and prepare for the workforce, starting from October this year.
Targeting schools with higher rates of free school meal uptake, as well as communities where youth face significant barriers to employment, Sainsbury’s is committed to reaching those who may struggle to connect with employer networks and career opportunities. This initiative aligns with recent educational reforms introduced by the Prime Minister, aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and practical workplace experience.
Addressing Youth Unemployment
The Prime Minister has emphasised the importance of technical education, aspiring to place it on par with traditional academic routes. The introduction of new pathways for 14-year-olds is intended to provide early access to technical skills, work experience, and relationships with local employers. This approach aims to ensure that young people have clear pathways into employment, reducing the issues associated with youth unemployment.
Currently, over one million young people aged between 16 and 24 are not engaged in education, employment, or training, which represents about one in eight individuals in this age group. In light of this, the Government has prioritised addressing the NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) crisis, collaborating with major employers like Sainsbury’s to create opportunities for young people across the nation.
Comprehensive Skills Development
The Modern Work Experience Programme will be implemented throughout England, Scotland, and Wales, focusing on areas where Sainsbury’s can have the most significant social impact. The initiative is designed to connect education with real-world opportunities, particularly in communities that offer free school meals and have a high number of NEET individuals.
Simon Roberts, Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s, expressed the significance of providing young people with their first employment experience. He noted that many young individuals are hindered by a lack of connections, which prevents them from accessing meaningful work opportunities. The programme aims to create diverse opportunities, including workplace visits, career sessions, and practical experience, all tailored to enhance confidence and communication skills across various sectors, including retail and logistics.
Collaborative Efforts for Greater Impact
This programme will cater to different age groups, offering younger students a mix of in-school learning alongside practical experience, while older participants will receive targeted support in areas like CV writing and interview preparation. Schools are encouraged to engage with the initiative starting in September, facilitating a smooth transition into the programme when it commences in October.
Moreover, Sainsbury’s is set to collaborate with The Careers & Enterprise Company and other industry partners to innovate modern work experience approaches. This partnership is aimed at developing a scalable model that can expand to additional stores and communities in the coming years.
Community Support and Leadership
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, highlighted the importance of accessible work experience for all young people, regardless of their background. He acknowledged the high number of young individuals not engaged in education or work and reinforced the government’s commitment to tackling youth unemployment through skills training and mentoring. Khan praised Sainsbury’s for its initiative to provide 10,000 work experience opportunities, which play a crucial role in breaking down barriers to employment.
Alan Milburn pointed out that many young people who are NEET have never held a job, which perpetuates a cycle of disadvantage. He commended Sainsbury’s for reaching out to communities facing the most significant challenges, thereby providing practical solutions to a pressing issue.
Future Prospects and Programme Details
The announcement from Sainsbury’s represents a significant commitment to addressing youth unemployment, following the Prime Minister’s recent educational reforms. The government continues to work collaboratively with employers, schools, and local leaders to expand work experience and skills support for young people.
Beginning in October 2026, Sainsbury’s will roll out around 10,000 work experience and employability opportunities through a combination of their existing workplace scheme, KickStarter, and a pilot programme in partnership with The Careers & Enterprise Company and the Institute of Grocery Distribution. These initiatives are designed to provide meaningful work experiences and insights into available career paths.
