Government Sets Ambitious Rail Freight Growth Targets
The government has announced a new initiative aimed at bolstering the rail freight sector, recognising its potential economic and environmental advantages. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the role of rail in the transport of goods across the country.
Previously, the government confirmed its support for an existing target, which aims for a significant increase in rail freight operations. Specifically, the goal is to achieve a minimum of a 75% rise in freight movement, measured in net tonne kilometres, by the year 2050. This ambitious target underscores the commitment to expanding rail’s role in freight logistics.
New Milestone for 2040
To facilitate progress towards the 2050 target, an additional interim goal has now been established. The government aims for a minimum of a 40% increase in rail freight movement in net tonne kilometres by 2040. This new milestone serves as a pivotal step in realising the overarching growth ambitions for the sector.
Further to this, the government anticipates that various categories of commodities will see substantial growth in rail freight volumes by 2040. The expected increases include a 65% rise in high-value goods, a 45% increase in construction materials, and a 7% growth in critical goods. These projections highlight the diverse potential for growth within the rail freight sector.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
This newly set target not only reflects the government’s aspirations for the rail freight industry but also signals a commitment to enhancing supply chain resilience and contributing to economic development. Additionally, it aligns with efforts to decarbonise the logistics sector, addressing pressing environmental concerns.
Estimates suggest that achieving the 2040 growth target could elevate the value of goods transported by rail freight from £33.7 billion to an impressive £49.5 billion. Furthermore, successfully meeting this target is projected to result in a reduction of approximately one million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, compared to the emissions that would occur if freight were to be transported by road.
Legislative Support for Rail Freight Growth
The Railways Bill currently under consideration in Parliament includes provisions for the Transport Secretary to establish a rail freight growth target for Great British Railways (GBR). This legislative framework will ensure that the responsibility to expand rail freight operations is firmly integrated into the decision-making processes of the new organisation.
By conferring statutory status to the government’s growth targets for rail freight, this initiative aims to secure the future of rail freight as a vital component of the national transport infrastructure.
