Acquiring Civil Legal Aid Services for Inquests: A Comprehensive Guide

Launch of Inquests Category of Law Procurement

On 4 August 2026, the procurement for the new Inquests Category of Law under the 2024 Standard Civil Contract was officially initiated. This marks a significant development in the legal landscape, aimed at enhancing the framework surrounding inquests.

The inaugural procurement round concluded on 4 September 2026, during which a total of 55 bids were submitted. Following a thorough evaluation, it was determined that 53 of these bids successfully met the assessment criteria and have progressed to the verification stage.

Progress in Verification and Contract Awards

As of 6 November 2026, four applicants have successfully completed the verification process and have been awarded contracts. Additional contracts will be granted as more applicants fulfil the necessary verification requirements.

Simultaneously, the assessment of subsequent tranches, which encompass applications submitted after the initial deadline of 4 September, is currently in progress. This ongoing evaluation reflects the commitment to a continuous procurement process.

Adoption of the Always On Approach

The procurement process now adopts the Always On approach that has been implemented across the 2024 Standard Civil Contract. This innovative method allows organisations to submit applications and have them assessed in monthly batches, ensuring that they are not confined to a single application period. This flexibility is designed to encourage broader participation and accessibility for potential applicants.

Inquests Training Courses Approval Process

In conjunction with the procurement efforts, an approval process for training courses specifically focused on inquests has been initiated. These approved courses will equip individuals with the necessary skills to meet the legal competence standards outlined in the Inquests Application Guide.
