Amber Wind Warning Ahead of Storm Austen
The Met Office has issued an Amber wind warning affecting Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and parts of West Devon as Storm Austen approaches. This significant weather event is anticipated to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to southern regions of the UK, commencing late on Thursday and extending into Friday.
In addition to the Amber warning, a broader Yellow wind warning has been implemented, which will remain in effect from Thursday evening through Friday. This warning has been updated as meteorologists gain greater confidence in the storm’s trajectory and intensity.
Storm Austen is forecast to traverse southern Britain late on Thursday night and into Friday morning, with the highest likelihood of severe weather conditions impacting southern and southwestern areas. In conjunction with the powerful gales, many locations are expected to experience bouts of heavy rain. A Yellow rain warning has also been issued for parts of southern and eastern Scotland for Friday.
Anticipated Impacts and Safety Precautions
Chris Bulmer, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, commented, “Storm Austen is poised to deliver a period of impactful weather across the UK starting Thursday night and continuing into Friday. While some uncertainty remains regarding the exact path of the storm, there is growing confidence in the potential for disruptive winds across parts of southwest England, which justifies the Amber warning.”
Forecasts suggest wind gusts could reach between 60 and 70 mph at times, compounded by heavy rainfall. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed about the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation evolves.
Winds are expected to gradually subside throughout Friday afternoon and evening, but the unsettled weather is likely to persist into the weekend.
Unsettled Weather Expected to Continue
Following Storm Austen, the weather is projected to remain volatile throughout the weekend and into the following week. Another low-pressure system is anticipated to bring strong winds to northern areas of the UK on Saturday and Sunday, which may result in additional warnings being issued.
As a precaution, the RNLI has urged individuals planning to visit coastal areas to exercise heightened caution. The combination of large waves, strong winds, and treacherous sea conditions poses significant risks.
Staying Safe Near the Coast
Ross Macleod, Water Safety Manager at the RNLI, stated, “With Storm Austen potentially creating hazardous conditions, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary risks. If you intend to visit the coast or any waterside area, please maintain a safe distance from the water, as conditions may overpower you and lead to dangerous situations.”
For those caught in trouble in the water, the RNLI advises the “Float to Live” technique: lie back in the water with your head tilted back to keep your ears submerged, extend your arms and legs, and try to relax to regain control of your breathing before signalling for help or swimming to safety.
If you observe someone else in peril, do not attempt to enter the water yourself, as this could result in further danger. Instead, follow the “phone, float, throw” strategy: call 999 or 112 and request the Coastguard, instruct the struggling individual to float, and throw them a flotation device, such as a life ring.
