Investigation Launched Following Multiple Odour Complaints
The Environment Agency has initiated an investigation after receiving over 50 complaints regarding unpleasant odours within a span of just ten days. This influx of reports has prompted immediate action, resulting in a directive for the removal of specific waste from a site operated by Kenny Waste Management Limited, located in Little Hulton, Salford, Greater Manchester.
In response to the growing number of odour-related complaints, the agency issued a partial suspension of the environmental permit for the site. This suspension imposes restrictions on waste handling and treatment activities within a designated area identified as the source of the offensive smells.
Regulatory Actions and Deadlines Set
The operator is required to clear waste from the affected area by 13 November. The suspension notice, which was issued on 8 October, came into effect immediately, mandating that the company implement measures to monitor and control odours emanating from the site.
Non-compliance with the stipulated requirements outlined in the notice constitutes an offence, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations.
Community Concerns Highlighted by Officials
Jeni Brittlebank, the Area Environment Manager at the Environment Agency, emphasised the importance of addressing community concerns. She stated, “Communities should not have to tolerate offensive odours, and we recognise the significant impact this issue has on residents, workers, and students in the Little Hulton area.” She reiterated that ensuring waste is managed responsibly to protect both people and the environment remains a top priority.
The agency has pledged to maintain close surveillance of the situation and indicated that further actions will be considered against those deemed responsible should the circumstances fail to improve.
Significant Increase in Public Complaints
Between 25 September and 5 October 2026, the Environment Agency documented a total of 52 complaints from the public concerning unpleasant odours in the Little Hulton vicinity. This alarming rise in complaints underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for effective management solutions to resolve the ongoing issues affecting the local community.
