The term “Ultra Hybrid” refers to a new generation of vehicles that prioritise electric power while incorporating an innovative approach to battery usage. The Leapmotor B10 exemplifies this concept, where electric energy is central to the driving experience. This vehicle does not solely rely on being plugged in to complete its journey; instead, it utilises an electric motor to drive the wheels, supported by a battery that stores energy. When additional power is required, a combustion engine activates to recharge the battery on the move, rather than directly powering the wheels.
The key distinction lies in the mechanics of energy transformation. The petrol engine does not propel the vehicle directly; rather, its role is to generate energy that allows the electric system to continue driving the car. This extended-range architecture aims to blend the benefits of electric driving with the freedom of long-distance travel, eliminating the need to rely solely on charging stations. Leapmotor claims that the B10 can achieve a remarkable combined range of up to 990 kilometres.
Redefining Electric Mobility Experience
Electromobility should transcend merely swapping gasoline for electricity; it should fundamentally transform the overall driving experience, enhancing how vehicles feel, operate, and can be customised. Leapmotor’s entry into the Mexican market is underpinned by the global expertise and infrastructure provided by Stellantis. “The electric vehicle industry has become monotonous, and we aim to change that,” explains Daniel Alejandro González, CEO of Stellantis Mexico, highlighting the brand’s vision.
The B10 combines a rear-mounted electric motor producing 160 kilowatts (kW), equivalent to 215 horsepower (HP) and 240 Newton-metres (Nm) of torque, with an 18.8 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Additionally, its extended-range system incorporates a 1.5-litre petrol engine that serves as an energy generator when the battery needs support.
Efficient Energy Management for Daily Use
The logic behind the B10’s design is straightforward. For everyday journeys, the vehicle can operate solely on the energy stored in its battery, offering an impressive electric range of up to 98 kilometres according to NEDC standards. For longer trips, the generator activates, producing electricity to power the system, ultimately extending the combined range to 990 kilometres.
Charging the battery is convenient; it can be replenished from 0 to 100% using alternating current in approximately 3.5 hours. Moreover, with fast DC charging, the battery can reach 30 to 80% in around 19 minutes, with a maximum charging power of 46 kW. The vehicle is also equipped with regenerative braking, which recovers energy during deceleration and feeds it back into the system.
Innovative Technology Inside the Cabin
Inside the B10, a 14.6-inch central display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a multilingual voice assistant, online navigation, 4G and WiFi connectivity, and Over The Air (OTA) updates transform the car into a dynamic software platform that can evolve over time. The accompanying app allows users to check the vehicle’s status and location, monitor battery charge, and control certain functions remotely.
This concept of an upgradable vehicle is central to Leapmotor’s philosophy. The company asserts that the overall hardware is designed to support system updates regardless of the model, as engineering teams work on the intelligent platform’s evolution. In Mexico, Leapmotor has over 3,000 engineers dedicated to developing these systems.
Personalisation and Market Adaptation
Technology also enhances the driving experience. The B10 allows for customisable ambient interior lighting, while the exterior colour palette includes options such as Stellar Blue, Dawn Purple, Lightning White, Tundra Grey, Eclipse Black, Storm Grey, and Galaxy Silver. “We want our electric car to have a personality and be fun, particularly for a generation that views technology as a form of expression,” notes Mauricio Gálvez, communications director for Stellantis Mexico.
Rafael Paz, director of Leapmotor Mexico, emphasises the challenge of capturing a market that the company is already familiar with. Their experience from launches in other countries has equipped them with a tested strategy tailored to meet the needs of Mexican roads, aiming to accelerate brand adoption.
Comprehensive Support for First-Time Electric Vehicle Buyers
Stellantis’ backing aims to alleviate one of the main concerns for first-time electric vehicle buyers: after-sales service. Leapmotor benefits from the Mopar after-sales infrastructure and a network of dealers to support customers post-purchase. The brand also prioritises human interaction in its service offerings. “What sets us apart is our human touch; we operate a 24/7 call centre staffed by people. While we embrace technological innovation in our vehicles, nothing compares to the assistance provided by humans,” González explains.
The package is further enhanced by the inclusion of a wall charger under specific promotional conditions, simplifying the transition to home charging.
A Unique Proposition in the Electric Vehicle Market
With the B10, Leapmotor aims to carve out a distinctive niche in the electric vehicle market. The vehicle is designed to be technologically advanced without being overly complicated, integrating software as a core aspect of the user experience while providing sufficient range for long journeys without depending solely on charging stations. The goal is to make electromobility more approachable, accessible, and above all, enjoyable, especially with the backing of Stellantis and an entry price of 575,000 pesos.
