Funding Opportunities for Community Groups to Foster Social Connections

Community-driven initiatives aimed at fostering connections among residents and enhancing local life are now invited to apply for the latest round of funding from the Common Ground Award. This initiative offers financial support to projects that enhance the facilities and resources essential for community engagement, enabling individuals to gather, interact, and feel a sense of belonging.

Starting today, applications are open for this funding opportunity, which builds upon the success of 211 projects that have previously received government backing across England, ensuring their crucial operations can continue.

Empowering Local Communities

The Common Ground Award, originally launched in 2025, is now welcoming a second wave of applications aimed at supporting community organisations that possess a deep understanding of their local areas. These groups are already facilitating interactions among individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering trust and collaboration.

The funding can be used for various purposes, such as transforming underutilised community centres into inviting hubs, acquiring equipment to facilitate broader participation in local activities, or establishing areas where neighbours can convene, converse, and bridge social divides. The primary objective of this funding is to promote understanding between diverse demographics, mitigate prejudice, and alleviate local tensions.

For this round, a total of up to £2.5 million is available, with individual applicants eligible to request between £20,000 and £50,000 to enhance the facilities and resources necessary for their ongoing community efforts. Moreover, collaborative groups can seek grants of up to £250,000, amplifying their influence and capacity to serve local populations.

Voices of Community Leaders

Florence Eshamlomi, the Minister for Communities, remarked, “Strong communities are nurtured through conversations among neighbours and in the everyday spaces where individuals can connect, cultivate trust, and feel a sense of belonging.” She highlighted the considerable impact this funding has had across England, supporting everything from community cafés and sports organisations to pop-up living rooms that encourage dialogue and foster new relationships.

Eric Noi, the founder of the Oldham Boxing & Personal Development Centre, shared his experience as a recipient of the Common Ground Award. “This award has empowered us to engage more individuals within our community, dismantling barriers and ensuring that access to sport and physical activity is genuinely inclusive.” He emphasised the importance of maintaining sports as accessible and welcoming to everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Success Stories from Previous Funding

Projects benefiting from the first round of funding are already demonstrating the transformative effects of such financial support. For instance, Accrington Stanley Football in the Community has utilised a newly acquired community minibus to expand health, education, sport, and wellbeing activities beyond its usual scope, reaching local neighbourhoods and enabling people of all ages to access vital support and engage with one another.

In Redcar and Cleveland, Footprints in the Community exemplifies how minor alterations to familiar spaces can yield significant benefits. With funding from the Common Ground Award, its Community Café has evolved into a more welcoming environment where individuals can drop in, interact, partake in activities, and access support, thereby reducing isolation and fostering stronger community ties.

The grant is open to voluntary, community, and social enterprise organisations based and operating in England that have charitable, benevolent, or philanthropic objectives. Organisations may apply individually or collaboratively as part of a consortium to enhance local impact.
