What We Know About Grand Theft Auto VI So Far

The game will be set in Vice City, a location inspired by Miami, which previously appeared in GTA: Vice City. This time, Vice City will be part of a larger region known as Leonida, incorporating new urban, rural, and coastal areas, as well as diverse natural environments.

The narrative will revolve around Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple involved in criminal activities who become ensnared in a conspiracy that spans all of Leonida following a heist gone awry. Notably, Caminos will be the first Latina woman to take centre stage in the franchise.

Leaks and Controversies Surrounding GTA VI

Information regarding the game has been supplemented by a series of leaks from a known source dubbed CyberLeek, who has been disseminating various clips purportedly showcasing gameplay since mid-August. These materials include glimpses of basketball matches, fights, maps, and even explicit content.

This week, the studio confirmed the authenticity of these leaks and initiated legal action to obtain information from Microsoft and Discord to track down the individual responsible, including IP addresses and other identifiers linked to the involved accounts.

According to CyberLeek, their actions are a form of protest against the current trajectory of the gaming industry. They criticise the decline of physical formats, the prevalence of microtransactions, the pre-sale of incomplete products, and now the phenomenon of “paywalled trailers,” referencing the partnership between Rockstar and Netflix.

Rockstar acknowledged that the leaks have had a “heart-wrenching” impact on its team. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that this will not adversely affect the performance of GTA VI in the market or the company’s financial standing.

The Financial Impact of GTA VI

Grand Theft Auto stands as one of the most valuable intellectual properties in the gaming industry. It is estimated that the series has sold approximately 465 million units worldwide by this year.

With 230 million units sold, Grand Theft Auto V is the most successful entry to date, achieving retail sales of $1 billion faster than any other release in the sector.

Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, aims to replicate and maximise this success with the launch of GTA VI. The company projects that during its fiscal year 2027, which includes the release of the new game, it could achieve between $8 billion and $8.2 billion in Net Bookings, a metric that reflects the value of video game sales, additional content, in-game purchases, and other digital products over a specific period.
