Maritime Big Play Highlights UKDI’s Investment Power in AUKUS Innovation

Showcasing Maritime Innovation in San Diego

Last month, the coastal waters of San Diego, California, served as a testing ground for cutting-edge maritime technologies during the Maritime Big Play (MBP) event. This gathering brought together innovators from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia, underscoring the collaborative efforts under the AUKUS partnership. The event demonstrated the commitment of the three nations to bolster maritime security and enhance technological superiority in an increasingly competitive maritime arena.

Among the notable participants were two companies supported by the UK Defence Innovation (UKDI): SEA Ltd (Systems Engineering & Assessment Ltd) from Frome and DAS Ltd (Decision Analysis Services Ltd) based in Basingstoke. These firms showcased advanced technologies aimed at improving operational effectiveness in underwater environments, marking a significant step forward in the development of maritime capabilities.

Advancements in Underwater Communication

SEA Ltd presented its Acoustic Deployment Environment Planning Tool, a sophisticated capability that leverages high-resolution environmental data and advanced acoustic modelling to enhance underwater communication performance. This innovative technology builds on over two decades of expertise in supporting the Royal Navy, further refined through UKDI backing in anticipation of the Maritime Big Play.

Marcus Donnelly, the Environmental Data Science Technical Lead at SEA, highlighted the importance of underwater communications in modern naval operations, particularly as autonomous and uncrewed systems become increasingly prevalent. He explained, “Our tool combines high-resolution environmental data with advanced acoustic modelling techniques to predict and optimise communications in complex underwater settings. This capability is crucial for situational awareness, command and control, and operational efficiency.”

Donnelly also noted that showcasing this technology in an operational environment allows for further testing and refinement, ensuring it meets the evolving demands of future maritime operations.

Enhancing Autonomous Underwater Operations

In addition to SEA, DAS Ltd introduced its Autonomous Fleet Task Assignment Framework (AF-TAF), an innovative software solution designed to coordinate fleets of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Anthony Dunn, Lead Consultant at DAS Ltd, explained that the AF-TAF enables AUVs to work collaboratively with reduced reliance on command and control systems. This enhances responsiveness and reliability in environments where communication may be compromised.

Dunn elaborated, “By employing distributed decision-making, AUVs can dynamically allocate tasks among themselves, adapt to changing conditions, and maintain mission effectiveness. Coupled with a simulation tool, AF-TAF aids defence planners in optimising fleet structures and operational scenarios, thereby fostering a more resilient and agile maritime force for future UK and allied operations.”

Investment in Defence Innovation

The Maritime Big Play event served as a key demonstration of the achievements made possible through UKDI’s investments. By facilitating the transition of promising UK technologies from development to real-world demonstration, these initiatives are bringing cutting-edge capabilities closer to operational deployment.

Sir Stephen Lovegrove, the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on AUKUS, attended the event, highlighting the UK’s unwavering commitment to advancing defence innovation in collaboration with its allies, the USA and Australia. The event not only showcased technological advancements but also reinforced the strategic partnerships that are essential for ensuring maritime security in the face of evolving global challenges.
