Celebrating World Maritime Day 2026
On Thursday, 24 September 2026, member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will convene to observe World Maritime Day. This significant occasion, first marked in 1978, serves to acknowledge and honour the invaluable contributions of seafarers and the maritime industry to global trade and safety.
The celebrations in 2026 and 2027 will centre around legislation and international maritime regulations, examining how enforcement, training, and technical support can enhance the safety of our seas. This year’s theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” encapsulates the ongoing efforts of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), which is committed to developing maritime standards and ensuring their implementation through inspections, certifications, counter-pollution measures, search and rescue operations, as well as providing support for seafarers.
Enhancing Maritime Standards and Innovation
In the past year, the MCA has intensified its collaboration with governmental bodies, industry stakeholders, and international partners to ensure that regulations keep pace with the swiftly changing technological environment. By engaging with the industry following the adoption of the IMO’s Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) code, conducting a continuous review of the seafarer syllabus, and hosting the Paris MoU’s Annual Committee Meeting, the MCA is dedicated to upholding high standards and fostering innovation within the UK’s maritime sector.
World Maritime Day 2026 also serves as a platform to spotlight the UK Maritime Innovation Hub, which was established last year and formally introduced in April. This hub promotes early collaboration between innovators and regulators in vital areas such as maritime autonomy, decarbonisation, and digital technology advancements.
Government Recognition of Maritime Contributions
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has reached out to IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez to commemorate the occasion and reaffirm the UK’s commitment to the IMO and its objectives. Maritime Minister Keir Mather remarked on the importance of seafarers, noting, “Seafarers keep Britain leading in global maritime— from the goods on our shelves to the people who travel by sea, our nation depends on them every single day.”
Mather further emphasised the vital role of the MCA in ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of maritime innovation. He stated, “As we support new technologies and establish safety standards, we are also cultivating a maritime sector that offers young people exciting career opportunities, ensuring that Britain continues to lead on the water.”

MCA Chief Executive Virginia McVea highlighted that World Maritime Day presents a crucial opportunity to recognise how international standards can be effectively translated into practical actions. “Every day at the MCA, our colleagues work diligently to transform policy into practice, creating a safer working environment for seafarers and fostering economic growth in the maritime sector, all of which relies on close collaboration with our partners,” she remarked. “We support innovation while ensuring safety and environmental protections that are essential for our future.”
