Unitree Unveils the “Superman” Robot
While it may not yet have the capability to leap tall buildings in a single bound or outrun a speeding bullet, Unitree Robotics has nonetheless chosen to name its latest creation “Superman”. This humanoid robot has captured global attention, showcasing impressive physical abilities that have gone viral recently. One might ponder whether a name like Astro Boy or Optimus Prime would have been more fitting for a robot boasting such extraordinary skills.
Unitree’s newest prototype is a remarkable feat of engineering, having been developed in just three months. It boasts the ability to jump over two metres effortlessly and run at an astonishing speed of 12.658 metres per second, surpassing the world record set by Olympic athlete Usain Bolt, who clocked in at 10.44 metres per second. The only component still missing is a head.
A Background on Unitree Robotics
Founded in 2016 by engineer Wang Xingxing in Hangzhou, China, Unitree Robotics has gained recognition for its production of quadrupedal robots, often referred to as “robot dogs”. These robots are notably more accessible than their counterparts from Boston Dynamics. In recent years, Unitree has emerged as a global leader in humanoid robot development, manufacturing its own motors, gearboxes, controllers, and perception systems. The company caters to a variety of sectors, including research, education, industry, and consumer markets.
The name Unitree may ring a bell, as its H1 and H2 models made headlines a few months ago with their stunning display of martial arts and parkour during the Spring Festival Gala. Additionally, one of their robots gained notoriety for adopting the role of a Buddhist monk, while another model, a colossal mecha weighing half a tonne, is priced at an impressive $650,000.
Commercial Success and Growth of Humanoid Robots
Beyond the viral videos, it is crucial to acknowledge the significant growth Unitree has experienced in recent months, particularly regarding commercial applications that enhance productivity. The company reported delivering over 5,500 humanoid robots to clients in 2025, as well as producing more than 6,500 units. Notably, these figures exclusively pertain to humanoid robots and do not include their quadrupedal models.
This achievement is particularly remarkable, as the primary challenge facing manufacturers is not merely proving that their models can walk, run, dance, perform stunts, or navigate steep terrains, but rather producing them in large quantities at a sufficiently low cost while identifying viable economic applications.
Unitree’s Competitive Edge in Robotics
China, and Unitree specifically, has successfully reached this milestone by creating robots that are significantly more affordable than many of their Western competitors. This price point allows universities, businesses, and laboratories to purchase hundreds of units for data collection, software development, and experimentation with artificial intelligence in physical environments. For instance, the G1 model has become a preferred platform for research and development tasks. Each robot sold also serves as an invaluable source of data that can be leveraged to enhance the next iteration of products.
