Mild, Rainy and Breezy: Expect More Stable Weather Later This Week

Warm Weather Ahead Despite Coming Showers

A low-pressure system situated in the Atlantic is set to usher in a spell of warmer weather on Tuesday, although conditions are expected to become increasingly wet and windy later in the day and into Wednesday.

Tuesday will commence with extensive cloud cover and light drizzle in southern regions, but temperatures are anticipated to rise significantly as sunny intervals develop throughout the afternoon. In contrast, the northern areas will experience a clear and somewhat crisp morning, which will gradually transition to overcast skies as the day progresses.

Matthew Lehnert, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, noted, “A deep low-pressure system far out in the Atlantic is the main factor influencing the UK’s weather in the coming days. Its initial effect will be to draw warmer air into much of the country on Tuesday, with temperatures potentially peaking at 27°C—unusually warm for this time of year.”

He added, “The night will remain warm across southern and eastern parts, with minimum temperatures reaching 19°C in some areas.”

Impending Rain and Windy Conditions

As Tuesday evening approaches, western regions of the UK will begin to experience increasingly wet and windy conditions, as a weather front gradually advances from west to east, affecting many areas late Tuesday and into Wednesday.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates explained, “As this weather front moves across the country late on Tuesday and into Wednesday, many locations can expect around 10mm of rainfall, with isolated areas in south-facing hills of the west potentially receiving over 40mm.”

This change in weather will also bring gusty winds, with speeds exceeding 50mph likely, particularly along exposed coastal regions in the northwest. Large waves may impact some western coasts, coinciding with high spring tides.

While Thursday and Friday are forecasted to bring further rain, with some heavy showers in many areas, there will also be opportunities for drier and brighter intervals.

Weekend Promises Calmer Conditions

As the weekend approaches, high pressure is expected to gradually build over much of the UK, diminishing the likelihood of rain and promising a pleasant weekend for many, with sunny periods and any light showers likely confined to the far northwest.

Keates concluded, “There is a strong degree of confidence that high pressure will prevail over the weekend, resulting in a predominance of dry and fine weather for many. Temperatures will generally hover around average for this time of year, and this high-pressure system is likely to persist into the early part of next week.”
