National Armaments Director Unveils New Chief Financial Officer Appointment

New Appointment in the NAD Group

Ian brings with him over four decades of financial leadership experience, which encompasses a diverse range of sectors including professional services, global pharmaceuticals, and luxury retail. His appointment as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) places him on the Executive Committee of the NAD Group, where he will play a pivotal role in the execution of the Defence Investment Plan (DIP), aligning with the evolving capability priorities of the Defence sector.

Under Ian’s stewardship, the finance team will be instrumental in supporting the various NAD Group divisions tasked with the development, delivery, maintenance, and management of the UK’s national arsenal and defence estate. His extensive background in formulating effective financial strategies and enhancing performance across both FTSE 100 and international private companies positions him well to tackle the financial challenges faced by these leading firms.

Ian Brimicombe’s Vision for the Future

In his own words regarding his new position, Ian Brimicombe expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m delighted to be joining the National Armaments Director Group as Chief Financial Officer. Having spent my career in the private sector, I’m excited by the opportunity to bring that experience to the Ministry of Defence at such a crucial juncture for the organisation, for defence, and for the UK. I look forward to collaborating with the team to build upon its existing foundations and to support its future growth and success.”

Ian’s educational journey began at King’s College London, where he graduated before pursuing his accountancy and tax qualifications at Coopers and Lybrand, now known as PwC. His career commenced with a solid technical grounding in audit, tax, and corporate finance, leading him to the pharmaceutical sector. He spent over two decades at what is now AstraZeneca, progressing through various senior leadership roles.

Experience in Diverse Sectors

Following his tenure in pharmaceuticals, Ian transitioned to the luxury fashion brand Burberry, where he dedicated nearly seven years to finance and business transformation initiatives. His tenure at Burberry included navigating the financial complexities brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as spearheading refinancing efforts. Most recently, he served as CFO at Abercrombie & Kent Group.

Rupert Pearce, the National Armaments Director, shared his thoughts on Ian’s appointment: “I am delighted to welcome Ian to the NAD Group. He brings with him a wealth of experience from the high-tech world of pharmaceuticals and the fast-paced retail arena. As UK Defence continues its transformation, and we aim to enhance efficiency in our systems, these skills are highly valued.”

A Legacy of Excellence

As Ian prepares to take on this new role, it is important to recognise the contributions of David Johnson, who will retire this autumn after an impressive tenure. As the first Group Finance Director, David has been an exemplary member of the Ministry of Defence for 37 years. His professionalism, meticulous nature, and keen attention to detail have significantly contributed to the security of our armed forces and the country at large. We extend our best wishes to him for a fulfilling retirement.

Ian is set to join the NAD Group on 7 September 2026, succeeding David Johnson, who will conclude his distinguished career at the end of November.
