President Zelenskyy to Visit Downing Street as UK Reinforces Commitment to Ukraine and Urges Allies to Join Efforts

Strengthening Ties: Prime Minister Welcomes President Zelenskyy

Today, the Prime Minister will host President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street, a visit aimed at reaffirming the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. The Prime Minister is expected to communicate to President Zelenskyy that he has instructed Ministers to develop additional sanctions, military assistance, and financial packages to provide urgent aid in the weeks ahead. This initiative includes a commitment to expedite the delivery of critical air defence missiles.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment, as the Chancellor of the Exchequer engages with international partners at the IMF meetings, advocating for enhanced support for Ukraine and urging compliance with the United States’ call for a comprehensive energy ceasefire from Russia. The UK government is calling on its allies to increase sanctions against Russia, thereby intensifying pressure on President Putin to adhere to these demands.

Comprehensive Military Support and Sanctions

The UK is intensifying its support for Ukraine, which includes a commitment to deliver £45 million worth of surface-to-air missiles. Furthermore, the UK stands firm on its plans to fully enforce a ban on maritime services related to Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, thereby limiting Russia’s access to the UK’s leading shipping and insurance services.

In addition, the UK will expedite the delivery of British Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs), which have demonstrated considerable effectiveness against jet-powered drones that have been deployed to strike targets well beyond the frontlines, including Kyiv. These drones, which are faster and capable of reaching higher altitudes than their propeller-driven counterparts, pose significant challenges for detection and interception.

With a commitment of £1.6 billion to supply over 5,000 LMMs to Ukraine over the next four years, the UK will also accelerate the release of £10 million from the recent £45 million missile package to address Ukraine’s immediate winter needs.

A Message of Solidarity and Resolve

Prior to the meeting, Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated, “Our unwavering support for Ukraine is crucial for our own safety in the UK and for ensuring that those defending their homeland have the necessary equipment to resist Russian aggression.” He emphasised a clear message to the Ukrainian people, asserting that the UK stands with them for as long as it takes and is prepared to enhance support in their courageous pursuit of peace in Europe.

He further remarked, “This support is not only the ethically right course of action; it is a critical necessity. Russia’s aggression must not be allowed to prevail on our continent.” In line with these sentiments, the Prime Minister has tasked Ministers with exploring further sanctions, military aid, and financial packages to deliver immediate assistance in the weeks ahead.

Call for Global Cooperation on Energy Sanctions

Meanwhile, Chancellor John Healey is utilising his platform at the IMF meetings in Bangkok to rally partners around a similar ban on Russian LNG, following the UK’s lead. This initiative follows the Foreign Secretary’s discussions with partners at the Warsaw Security Forum, reinforcing the need for international cooperation in response to Russia’s ongoing military actions.

As Russia continues its relentless bombardment of Kyiv and crucial energy infrastructure, the Chancellor will advocate for a unified European response, underscoring the importance of maintaining a steadfast commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty. He stated, “The conflicts in the Middle East and Europe are impacting lives globally. As Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine persists, our dedication to the Ukrainian people remains unshakeable. I urge our partners to support the ban on Russian LNG, as we have done in the UK, to diminish the funding for the war that Putin is seeking.”
