Prime Minister’s Historic Visit to Kyiv
On Monday, 24 August, Prime Minister Andy Burnham will embark on his inaugural overseas visit as Prime Minister, travelling to Kyiv, Ukraine. This significant trip comes shortly after welcoming President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the UK in July, marking a strong gesture of solidarity between the two nations.
The visit coincides with Ukraine’s Independence Day, a poignant occasion for the Ukrainian people. During his time in Kyiv, Burnham is expected to reaffirm the United Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and resilience in the face of ongoing aggression from Russia. He will emphasise that the UK stands firmly behind Ukraine, asserting that threats from Russia only serve to strengthen their resolve.
Strengthening Defence Collaboration
In a demonstration of the UK’s dedication to supporting Ukraine’s defence capabilities, the Prime Minister will announce that the UK government has granted defence firm MBDA the green light to release classified information regarding UK components for the SCALP long-range missile. This initiative aims to facilitate the establishment of local assembly lines in Ukraine, in collaboration with France.
The SCALP missile, a product of French innovation, shares technological foundations with the UK’s Storm Shadow missile. This announcement builds on the UK’s recent provision of long-range strike weapons, which was the first of its kind for defensive support to Ukraine in 2023, enabling both French and Ukrainian teams to advance local assembly efforts.
Furthermore, this move aligns with the UK’s broader initiative, Project Brakestop, which is focused on rapidly developing cost-effective advanced long-range strike options for Ukraine’s defence.
Commitment to Ukraine’s Future
During his visit, Prime Minister Burnham will participate in various Independence Day celebrations and co-chair his first meeting of the Coalition of the Willing. This coalition, which comprises international partners, aims to explore ongoing support for Ukraine as it valiantly defends itself against Russia’s unlawful invasion.
In his remarks, Burnham will communicate to his international counterparts that the UK’s leadership in supporting Ukraine will remain steadfast under his administration. He is expected to receive an award on behalf of the British people, honouring the United Kingdom’s significant contributions to Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
Long-standing Partnership and Financial Commitment
Since the onset of Russia’s aggressive military actions, the UK has emerged as one of Ukraine’s principal allies, providing extensive military, economic, and diplomatic support rooted in a century-long partnership. This partnership includes leading efforts to ensure Ukraine’s long-term security alongside France as co-chairs of the Coalition of the Willing.
The UK has committed a substantial £25 billion in funding to Ukraine, which encompasses £16 billion allocated for military assistance and £5.6 billion designated for non-military support. This financial backing underscores the UK’s commitment to not only supporting Ukraine during the conflict but also aiding in its recovery and rebuilding efforts in the future.
