Strengthening Bus Services in the West Midlands
In a significant development for public transport in the West Midlands, a strategic partnership has been established between the government and the West Midlands Combined Authority to ensure the sustainability of vital bus services. This collaboration aims to take local control of these services, a move that will benefit millions who rely on bus transport in the region.
This initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Richard Parker with the backing of Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, seeks to maintain essential bus routes and enhance service quality through franchising. The urgency of this partnership arose when the parent company of National Express, a major local operator, announced its withdrawal from the market, jeopardising a vast majority of bus services in the area. In response, an infusion of £11.5 million in government funding over the next three years has been allocated to support the West Midlands Combined Authority in transitioning bus services to public control, thereby safeguarding critical routes.

He further noted that buses are essential to the region’s public transport framework, and this step will enhance service reliability and affordability for local communities. The partnership is poised to protect approximately 4,800 jobs and maintain up to 750 buses on the road, ensuring continued connectivity for residents seeking employment, education, healthcare, and leisure activities.
The West Midlands bus network, which facilitates around 4.6 million journeys weekly, is undergoing a transformation that reflects the government’s commitment to public transport. The West Midlands Combined Authority is currently finalising the deal’s specifics and expects to complete the transaction by autumn.

In addition to the £11.5 million allocated for immediate support, the government has committed over £2 billion to the West Midlands Combined Authority over five years, giving them the flexibility to allocate funds based on local needs—be it fare reductions, new routes, or environmentally friendly buses.

Additionally, the Prime Minister has announced the removal of time restrictions on disabled bus passes, allowing individuals with disabilities across England to enjoy unlimited free travel all day, a change that will be implemented on April 1st.
