Revolutionising Military Air Mobility
The introduction of the UK’s inaugural foot-launched military paraglider systems could significantly enhance the operational capabilities of British troops, granting them the ability to access the skies independently, without reliance on runways, helicopters, or drop aircraft. This innovative approach is expected to transform covert operations, enabling soldiers to traverse challenging terrains and infiltrate hostile environments with greater ease.
Developed by the British start-up Blakcro, these paraglider systems can be assembled in under eight minutes, even in complete darkness. They are designed for stealth, boasting a low acoustic, visual, and radar signature that allows for discreet insertions into sensitive areas. With a remarkable operational range of up to 200 miles powered solely by the glider’s engine, these systems represent a significant leap forward in military technology.
Support from the Ministry of Defence
Blakcro’s advancements have been made possible thanks to approximately £6 million in funding from the Ministry of Defence (MOD). This investment underscores the government’s commitment to fostering innovation within the defence sector and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are pushing the boundaries of military technology. The Wiltshire-based company has tailored its designs specifically for military applications, with plans to deliver operational systems from this year through 2027.
The glider’s compact design allows it to be folded into a case resembling a large rucksack, making it highly portable for soldiers on the ground. This flexibility, combined with the ability to carry essential equipment such as body armour, night vision gear, and weapon mounts, positions Blakcro’s paraglider as a versatile asset for modern military operations.
Strategic Partnerships and Growth
Blakcro’s engagement with UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) has been instrumental in its rapid growth and development. As part of the MOD’s initiative to connect innovative companies with defence needs, Blakcro has benefited from ongoing support across multiple projects, including a Defence Innovation Loan that has facilitated the transition from a single product to full-scale production.
Since its collaboration with UKDI, Blakcro has expanded its workforce from three to eleven employees and secured three key contracts with the UK Ministry of Defence and NATO allies. This growth reflects the broader ambition of UKDI to strengthen the UK’s sovereign defence supply chain, ensuring that cutting-edge capabilities are accessible to the armed forces while fostering job creation in regions like Wiltshire.
