Nvidia’s Ambitious Acquisition
Nvidia has reached an agreement to acquire Hugging Face, a company renowned for developing online tools for developers and maintaining an extensive library of open-source datasets. The deal, valued at nearly $13 billion, was officially announced on Thursday morning, following weeks of speculation regarding the acquisition.
Commitment to Open Standards
This acquisition highlights Nvidia’s strong commitment to delving deeply into the realm of generative AI software development and associated infrastructure. The company currently offers its clients a suite of open-weight, free, and customisable AI models known as Nemotron. As part of the announcement, Nvidia pledged to uphold Hugging Face’s existing open standards, indicating the chipmaker’s aim to become an even more vital resource for developers seeking access to cutting-edge, non-proprietary tools.
This move further underscores Nvidia’s belief that open-weight models are more beneficial for the tech sector compared to closed, proprietary AI models like those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. Earlier this month, Nvidia convened over 80 companies to sign an open letter urging the US government to support open-weight AI models. The company also launched an initiative called SAFE (Shared AI Findings Exchange), encouraging tech firms to confidentially gather and analyse AI-related incidents, identify recurring control failures, and publish evidence-based operational recommendations to mitigate systemic risk.
Championing Open Collaboration
Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, remarked, “Open models allow startups, companies, universities, and public institutions to leverage advanced capabilities without needing to train each model from scratch.” He added, “AI advances more rapidly when people can collaborate on its development.”
Nvidia’s commitment to open-source software and open-weight AI may seem like a significant shift, especially considering that CUDA, the software layer for its highly sought-after GPUs, is proprietary in nature. However, as leading AI labs and major hyperscalers strive to develop their own custom chips, Nvidia is positioning itself as not only a GPU manufacturer but also a provider of high-performance CPUs. The company has expanded its software offerings to ensure developers continue to innovate on Nvidia platforms.
The Journey of Hugging Face
Founded a decade ago in New York by three French entrepreneurs, Hugging Face initially aimed to launch an AI “companion” application. Although this concept did not materialise, the team’s efforts to create their own natural language processing (NLP) tools paved the way for their next venture: making complex technological tools more accessible to developers. Hugging Face ultimately evolved into a platform where developers can share source code, datasets, and, in the age of generative AI, large language models.
In a post on X announcing the acquisition, Clément Delangue, co-founder and CEO of Hugging Face, expressed, “Open-source AI is at a tipping point. Thanks to the community, we have demonstrated that it can be a complement, and even an alternative, to closed APIs. However, for this to happen at a larger scale, we need more computational power, support, collaboration, and visibility.”
Funding and Future Prospects
According to PitchBook data, Hugging Face had raised nearly $400 million in venture capital funding by December 2025. Among its investors are prominent firms such as Betaworks, Lux Capital, Sequoia Ventures, Coatue, and Addition, with notable individual investors including Greg Brockman, Richard Socher, and NBA player Kevin Durant.
Recently, Hugging Face has garnered attention following a hacking incident involving AI agents from OpenAI, which sparked extensive debate throughout the tech sector regarding the security and manageability of autonomous agents promoted by leading AI companies.
Looking Ahead
In a 2023 interview with CNBC, Delangue predicted a dramatic increase in the number of developers working with AI models, estimating that within five years, “there will be around 100 million AI creators. And if they all use Hugging Face every day, we will certainly be in a strong position.”
It is clear that Nvidia shares this optimistic outlook.
