A groundbreaking portable device designed for at-home use is now available in the United States, requiring a prescription for access. This innovative treatment aims to address depression, a condition that affects a significant portion of the population, with estimates suggesting that around one in six American adults relies on antidepressants. Swedish company Flow Neuroscience is marketing its device as a viable alternative to conventional pharmaceuticals. However, given its current pricing, which is in the four-figure range, it may take some time for this futuristic helmet to gain traction among potential users.
Daily Use for Optimal Results
The device is worn on the forehead for a daily session lasting 30 minutes, controlled via a user-friendly application. It delivers low-intensity electrical stimulation to the left frontal lobe, a brain region crucial for mood regulation and emotional processing. Research indicates that individuals suffering from depression often show reduced activity and weaker neural connections in this specific area of the brain.
Flow received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December, marking its product as part of an emerging wave of wearable technologies that monitor, record, or stimulate brain activity. For instance, California-based Cognixion has adapted the Apple Vision Pro to create a communication system for individuals with paralysis that does not rely on speech or motor control. Other devices, like the Muse headband, aim to enhance meditation, while Elemind focuses on aiding sleep onset.
Comparative Effectiveness and Treatment Options
The Flow device operates on the same brain areas targeted by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an FDA-approved treatment for depression that utilises magnetic fields to stimulate neurons. Unlike TMS, which necessitates clinical visits and a regimen of treatments typically administered five days a week over several weeks—costing up to $15,000 without insurance—Flow’s device can be used comfortably at home.
Daniel Månsson, CEO of Flow and a former clinical psychologist, emphasises the importance of creating a practical solution for patients. “To make a significant impact on the issue, it’s essential to develop something that can effectively influence the brain while being safe and easy to use at home,” he asserts.
Clinical Trial Insights and Side Effects
A recent clinical trial involving 174 participants diagnosed with major depressive disorder revealed that 45% of those using the Flow device reported a remission of symptoms within 10 weeks, compared to just 22% in the control group, who received a placebo version. This trial included individuals both on and off antidepressant medication, indicating that the device can serve as a complementary treatment under medical supervision.
Reported side effects were minimal, with some users experiencing mild skin irritation, headaches, and concentration difficulties. In contrast, traditional antidepressants can lead to a range of side effects, including nausea, weight gain, drowsiness, dry mouth, and sexual dysfunction, although these symptoms often diminish after a few weeks of use.
Adoption and Future Prospects
In Europe, where the device has been approved since 2019, more than 65,000 users have benefited from Flow’s technology. The UK’s National Health Service is also conducting a pilot trial with the helmet. In the United States, patients can obtain a prescription from a healthcare provider, either in person or via telehealth services. However, at present, users must cover the costs out of pocket, priced at $2,200 for a 10-week period, followed by a monthly fee of $325. This rate significantly exceeds that of standard antidepressants, which are typically covered by insurance. Månsson has expressed that the company is actively seeking reimbursement options from insurance providers.
Vinod Khosla, a billionaire venture capitalist and one of the initial investors in Flow, believes that non-pharmaceutical approaches to treating depression represent the future of mental health care. “I would wager that if you asked anyone on antidepressants, they’d prefer not to take them,” he remarks. “They would appreciate a treatment option that does not involve drugs or chemicals.”
