The Transport Secretary has engaged in a significant dialogue with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, aiming to facilitate a smoother experience for holidaymakers as they navigate the EU’s enhanced security checks during the forthcoming summer holiday season. This meeting, held on 13 July 2026, highlighted the shared commitment to ensuring that travel remains as effortless as possible for passengers during this busy period.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas discussed the implications of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), particularly in light of the anticipated surge in travellers. Both leaders acknowledged the challenges faced by those seeking to embark on their summer getaways and agreed to collaborate closely to enhance border crossing efficiency over the summer and into the autumn months.
Significant Government Investment in Infrastructure
In a bid to alleviate congestion at critical travel points, the government has announced a substantial £20 million investment aimed at expanding passport checking facilities at the Port of Dover. This funding builds upon an earlier allocation of £10.5 million, which has already been deployed across Dover, Eurotunnel, and Eurostar to mitigate potential disruptions. The additional resources will contribute to increasing the number of processing booths, thereby enhancing vehicle capacity and reducing wait times for travellers in the coming years.
Industry stakeholders have expressed their appreciation for the Transport Secretary’s proactive engagement and dedication to preparing for the peak travel season. Doug Bannister, CEO of the Port of Dover, conveyed gratitude for the government’s support, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts in managing the increasing demands of summer travel.
Commitment to Passenger Welfare
In her remarks, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that holidaymakers enjoy the summer holidays they deserve. She expressed confidence that the discussion with the EU Commissioner reflected a unified approach to addressing the concerns of travellers. Alexander noted, “I was reassured that the EU commissioner for transport understood the concerns of holidaymakers and recognised the need for us to work together to make sure journeys are as seamless as possible during the busiest travel period of the year.”
The EES, which mandates registration for all non-EU passengers entering and exiting Schengen countries, was initially implemented in stages starting in October 2025. As of April, the system requires travellers to scan their passports and provide biometric information, including photographs and fingerprints, at the border. While the majority of these checks will occur within EU member states, they will also be conducted in the UK for individuals travelling via ferry from the Port of Dover or by train into the EU, reinforcing border security measures.
