UK Airports Embrace Contactless Technology for Enhanced Passenger Experience

Introduction of Contactless eGates at UK Airports

Passengers arriving in the United Kingdom will soon experience a more streamlined entry process as a state-of-the-art contactless system is set to be implemented at airport eGates. Starting from 6 October, these eGates will begin transitioning to the new technology, with all units expected to be fully upgraded by early 2027.

How the New System Operates

The upgraded process is designed to enhance efficiency while ensuring security. Upon approaching an eGate, passengers will have their photograph taken. This live image will be matched against verified immigration, travel, and passport information. Once these checks are completed successfully, the eGate will open automatically, allowing passengers to proceed without the need to present their passport at the reader.

Using advanced facial recognition technology, the system verifies the traveller’s identity before conducting comprehensive border security checks. For those requiring additional scrutiny, passengers may still need to present their passport at the reader or might be directed to a Border Force officer, just as is the practice today. Border Force personnel will remain vigilant at all eGates to offer assistance, and it is advised that travellers keep their passports on hand throughout their journey.

Efficiency Gains from the Contactless Upgrade

Testing has indicated that the new contactless eGates can expedite the process by up to 25% compared to the traditional method of using a passport. The phased implementation will begin at East Midlands Airport, catering initially to British citizens, before being rolled out to additional airports and other eligible nationalities in the following months.

Support from Key Stakeholders

Phil Douglas, Director General of Border Force, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating that it represents a significant advancement for travellers entering the UK. He emphasised the importance of utilising cutting-edge technology to ensure that journeys are not only faster but also secure, aligning with the UK’s stringent border protocols. He noted that this innovation builds on recent efforts to extend eGate access to children aged eight and above, enhancing convenience for families.

Karen Dee, chief executive of AirportsUK, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the positive impact on passengers. She affirmed that UK airports are committed to integrating new technologies that bolster security while enhancing the travel experience. Dee also underscored the need for efficient border processing, indicating a collaborative effort with government officials to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.

Pioneering Innovations at East Midlands Airport

Steve Griffiths, Managing Director of East Midlands Airport, shared his excitement about being the first UK airport to implement the contactless eGates. He reinforced the airport’s dedication to providing an effortless travel experience and welcomed any technological advancements that contribute to a more seamless journey for customers. This initiative complements recent upgrades to the immigration hall aimed at improving passenger flow.

Birmingham Airport has also been proactive in supporting the rollout of the contactless system. Chris Wilson, Head of Terminal & Capacity Planning at the airport, noted that the new eGates would significantly enhance the arrival experience for passengers entering the UK.

Broader Context of Border Security Enhancements

The introduction of contactless eGates is part of a broader strategy to modernise the UK’s border control framework, as outlined in the Immigration White Paper. This development follows the recent launch of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, which enables officials to assess potential security risks prior to a traveller’s arrival in the UK.

Additionally, the government has reported a decrease in small boat arrivals in recent months, attributed in part to increased personnel deployment on French beaches through a new payment-by-results agreement. Since the last election, over 80,000 individuals without legal right to remain in the UK have been removed or returned, marking a 52% increase in enforcement actions, including a notable rise in the removal of foreign national offenders.

Key Information for Passengers

The new eGates will be operational at several UK airports, including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, and Stansted. It is crucial for travellers to note that they must still carry their passports while navigating through the airport. Signage will be installed to assist passengers during this transition, and all technology involved will undergo rigorous testing to ensure its reliability and effectiveness. Dual nationals are advised to travel on a valid British passport or possess a Certificate of Entitlement to minimise any potential delays at the border.
